Hartley Primary Academy Newsletter
October 2023
Principal's Welcome
Dear Parents/Carers,
What an incredibly busy first term we have had - I think the staff are all in need of a good break over half term, especially following on from our Ofsted inspection last week! The team have been working ridiculously hard since our last 'ungraded' inspection in February 2022. We were all determined that when they came back to do a 'graded' inspection (which is much more in depth) that we would once again be graded as 'Outstanding'. Unfortunately, I am not able to share the results of the inspection until the report is published but hopefully, that will only be in a matter of a few weeks and then it will be our pleasure to share Ofsted's findings. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful parents/carers for the tremendous support and well wishes - we are one big team at Hartley and you are all very much part of it. Your encouragement, smiles and discrete 'thumbs up' during the process really helped to keep us going.
A couple of reminders from the office this week:
Attendance Text Service – text 07860054519 – If your child is not going to be in please send a text with just their name and reason. You are unable to call this number, it is just available to text regarding attendance.
Parking & Driving near HPA – Please remember to respect the local residents regarding your driving & parking.
Lost Property – as always on a Friday, lost property will be on the table tennis tables in the top playground at 3.30pm
Supervision of children - children must remain supervised after school and not be allowed into the wooded area at the back of the lower playground
Thank you and have a wonderful half term!
Kind regards,
Nicole Galinis
Principal

Secondary school application deadline 31st October
The deadline for submitting your school applications is during the school holidays - please make sure you have completed the application for your child if they are currently in Year 6. All parents should go to www.kent.gov.uk/ola to register and apply. Information about secondary schools will be available from the Kent County Council website.
PTA Autumn Disco - Friday 10th November
In preparation for the Christmas Fair the PTA are asking that all children bring in an item that can be added to a year-group Christmas Hamper. The hampers will become raffle prizes at the Chirstmas Fair on Saturday 9th December. Hamper items can be anything you would wish to find in a Christams hamper, e.g. mince pies, christmas pud, chutney, shortbread, crackers, chocolates, wine, etc. It might be a good idea to work together as year groups to make sure the hampers aren't filled with sixty of the same thing! If you could use your year group WhatsApp groups to co-ordinate who is bringing what, that would be very helpful!
On the day of the Autumn Disco, as a reward for bringing in hampers items, children may come to school in non-uniform (all ready for the disco if they are going) or they may choose to wear a Halloween outfit if they wish. Children must not wear masks or anything scary though. Please remember all children need to be in sensible footwear and be in clothing that is warm enough for when they are out at playtime. Year groups who have PE will still need to wear their trainers please and please be mindful of making sure whatever they are wearing is safe for them to exercise in.
PTA Smarties Challenge
All of the children should have received a tube of Smarties from the PTA this week. The PTA are asking for the tubes to be filled with coins once the Smarties have been eaten and for the tubes to be returned to school after half term and by Friday 10th November please. The class that collects the most will win that amount to spend on something of their choice!
Attendance Term 1
Please have a look at our attendance policy to make sure you are aware of our new procedures regarding lateness and unauthorised absences.
We have a number of classes who have done really well with their attendance, as you can see below:
Well done to Redwood, Rowan, Ash, Sycamore, Beech, Elm, Oak and Cherry for all achieving a fantastic 97%!
Signs and Symptoms of Scarlet Fever
We have had a couple of cases of SF in school recently - not in the same classes or even year groups so it does not constitute an outbreak. However, we thought it would be worth sharing some information about Scarlet Fever so that you can identify it quickly should your child get infected.
Scarlet fever is a common childhood infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococcus (GAS).
It is not usually serious but should be treated with antibiotics. The early symptoms of scarlet fever include sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. After 12 to 48 hours, the characteristic red, pinhead rash develops, typically first appearing on the chest and stomach, then rapidly spreading to other parts of the body, and giving the skin a sandpaper-like texture. The scarlet rash may be harder to spot on darker skin, although the 'sandpaper' feel should be present.
Children and adults with suspected scarlet fever should be excluded from nursery/school/work until 24 hours after the commencement of appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Contacts of Scarlet Fever cases (including siblings or household members) who are well and do not have symptoms do not require antibiotics and can continue to attend the setting. They should seek treatment if they develop symptoms.
There is no increased risk of complications for pregnant women but if you are concerned, please discuss with your midwife.
Football Tournament
Congratulations to our fabulous footballers who took part in the Riverview 7s tournament this term and won the Ford Shield. Sadly they were just pipped to the post in the final match so didn’t go through to represent Gravesham in the County 7s, but they were commended for their honesty and sportsmanship. We are very proud of our boys who represented our school honourably - well done boys Thank you to Mrs Fewell, Miss Anderson and parents for supporting our team!
The Community Cupboard
Earlier this term our head boys and girls helped to take all of your generous donations to The Community Cupboard. They also helped weigh our donations and check best before dates. The children worked hard and learned a lot about what The Community Cupboard does to help people in our local community. As a reward for their hard work they all got a donut from the Community Cupboard team. Well done team - you did HPA proud!
NHS 75th Anniversary
Hartley Primary fully embraced the NHS 75th July event and raised an incredible £3,128.01 for Darent Valley's Lollipop Children’s Fund . The children had a wonderful day undertaking a range of activities based on the number 75 from taking penalties, to dancing, to table tennis!
Some of our School Council members made the presentation to Sarah Buchan-Tigere, Matron Children and Young Peoples Services who thanked the children for their incredible donation. Valley Hospital Charities own Mark and mascot Dave added their thanks on behalf of the charity and invited the School to view their name on the Lollipop £1000 Wall of Fame donation board. Staff from Willow Ward then joined to express their gratitude and have pictures taken
Free School Meals
If your child is under 19 and in full-time education, you may be able to get free school meals for them if you receive certain benefits. The quickest and easiest way to check whether your child is eligible for free school meals and to apply is via the KCC website:
https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals
If your child is already registered for free school meals, you do not need to reapply. If you’re not sure whether your child is already registered, please call the school and we can check our records, or you can contact KCC on 03000 416464.
