Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

As of April 2021, all UK state schools have a responsibility to teach Relationships, Sex, and Health Education in school. More information about what that means is given in this special newsletter.

In 2020 we consulted our whole school community on the Relationships & Sex Education policy, which included parents, learners, and teachers. We held focus groups to capture their views, and were then able to make changes to the policy. It is a statutory duty for schools to update the policy every 3 years, and our leadership team has decided to make no changes to the policy at this time.

If any parents, particularly, those new to the school, would like to share their views, or if they have any questions or clarifications, please e-mail rse@harrowhigh.com by Thursday 12th January 2023.

The policy is also attached available on the school website using this link: Harrow High School Relationships & Sex Education Policy

Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child’s secondary school: a guide for parents

We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. That is why, from September 2020, all secondary age children are taught Relationships, Sex and Health Education.

These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life. The world for all young people looks very different from the way it did 20 years ago when this curriculum was last updated – these changes bring the content into the 21st century, so that it is relevant for your child.

Harrow High School has the flexibility to deliver the content in a way that is age and developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs and religious background of its pupils.

Relationships and Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education will build on the teaching at primary. It aims to give young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds. Your child’s school will cover content on what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like and what makes a good friend, colleague and successful marriage or committed relationship. At the appropriate time, the focus will move to developing intimate relationships, to equip your child with knowledge they need to make safe, informed and healthy choices as they progress through adult life.

By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • families

  • respectful relationships, including friendships

  • online media

  • being safe

  • intimate and sexual relationships, including sexual health.

You can find further details by searching ‘relationships, sex and health education’ on GOV.UK.

Health Education

Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.

You can find further details by searching ‘relationships, sex and health education’ on GOV.UK.

By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

• mental wellbeing

• internet safety and harms

• physical health and fitness

• healthy eating

• drugs, alcohol and tobacco

• health and prevention

• basic first aid

• changing adolescent body

Unfortunately, the prices in the school canteen have increased. Please see the letter from the school meal supplier explaining the reasons for rises.

The main meal still remains good value for money. For £2.41 your child can have a full hot meal and a desert. There are also sandwiches and a variety of vegetarian and halal options.

If you are experiencing any difficulties affording lunch for your child please contact the school office.

School Meals

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with much regret that from January we have had to request an increase to the tariff and main meal price within Harrow Secondary Schools and are writing to inform you the reasons behind having to increase the school meal price, which will move from £2.34 to £2.41.

As you may have seen, the latest update is that food inflation is now running at 14%. We are doing all that we can to prevent increase to our customers, such as working with our suppliers, reviewing our recipes, and supporting our teams to work as efficiently as possible.

However, to maintain our offer at the highest and most nutritional standard and not compromise on portion size we cannot avoid increases to the meal price.

In these difficult times, it is more important than ever to stay healthy and to follow a balanced and nutritious diet which meals provided within a school environment are designed to achieve.

The meals served within your school remain the high standard they have always been, which we believe still represent value in terms of the nutritional benefits for our customers.

In addition, we design our menus to follow a winter and summer theme as such we change them October half-term and at Easter liaise closely with our supply chain to procure quality ingredients for recipes used.

Unfortunately, we occasionally experience issues of stock availability and cannot guarantee the advertised menu will be offered. In the event of a failed delivery or stock problem we will provide an alternative menu choice which will be compliant to guidelines and fully supported with allergen profiles.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this, or any other aspect of our service, please contact our Feeding Hungry Minds website: feedinghungryminds@uk.issworld.com
