The Gunpowder Plot Trip

On Friday 3 November, the GCSE Drama students had their first experience of Immersive Theatre. After being locked in a holding cell, they witnessed the pleas of the imprisoned and tortured Catholic Priests before becoming the unwilling (but alive) assistants to Thomas Percy, defender of the plot to kill King James I of England at the state opening of parliament on 5 November 1605.

The piece took us all on a journey in the genuine vaults beneath the Tower. With more information emerging through live action, Virtual reality and utterly convincing scenarios, a decision had to be made ... to blow up Parliament or to rescue 'Jon Johnson' (also known as Guy Fawkes)?

The learners were thoroughly engaged throughout the experience, all expressing just how much they had enjoyed the opportunity to experience a truly immersive performance.

Black History Month - History Projects

The Year 8s were tasked with completing a project for Black History Month, 2023. The focus of our study was Black Nationalism and the different approaches towards equality. They studied the ideas of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks in class, but were free to research any other historical figure that contributed to the fight for equality.

The best of the work is now on display in the L Block Corridor. You can see the really excellent standard of work that was completed. The Year 8s went above and beyond! Inspirational thinkers such as Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and Marcus Garvey are all pride of place for all of our HHS learners to read and be inspired by.

Year 7 Geography Projects - Atmospheric Hazards

The best of the Year 7 student project work on Atmospheric Hazards is now also on display in the L Block Corridor. The Year 7s really impressed us with their inventiveness and dedication. They were given a very 'open' research project task, and they really went beyond all expectations. It has been an excellent start to the year from this year group and the sign of things to come as they progress through school. Take a look at the high quality and creativity on display.

Year 11 Geography Trip to Norfolk

At the start of November, 32 brave Geographers set out to the beaches of Norfolk for a weekend of research, data collection and data analysis. They were looking into erosion on the North Norfolk coast as part of their GCSE paper 3 requirements. The weather was freezing, the conditions were challenging, but the learners were amazing. They got stuck into every task and were rewarded with some fun activities organised by Yousef (archery & wall climbing), as well as lots of good food. The work they did will really help with their studies, but don't worry if you weren't able to attend - there will be a day trip to the River Thames coming up in March.

Co-Curricular Clubs

Our co-curricular clubs got off to a wonderful start this term with Cooking Club, Football, French Café, Chess and Board Games Club all proving to be particularly popular among learners.

We offer our learners a broad mix of both academic, skill building and sporting clubs to involve themselves in. These clubs allow students to have fun, learn and develop friendships and life skills relevant to their future careers.

Please have a look at the Spring term Co-Curricular timetable below and encourage your child/children to sign up via Google Classroom.

Code Club

Code Club is approaching 400 visits this school year and continues to serve as a valuable learning community for young people wishing to get good at programming.

At KS4, students are coding well beyond their years, while at KS3, a small group of Year 8 girls are burning through a national competition called Cyber Girls, where they solve one pretty devilish tech problem after the next, and have definitely exceeded expectations for their progress.

In the pipeline now is a Kenton Cup #2 - the rematch, where students visit our competitors and code something impressive for an audience.  If you are reading this and are interested in joining code club, just show up to C7 after school on either Tuesday (KS3) or Thursday (KS4).

Staff Rangoli Workshop

We would like to say a massive thank you to Ananya, Nishka & Ruhi in Year 10 for running a fantastic Rangoli workshop for staff members. Their initiative in running the workshop and sharing their skills with staff is commendable and everyone really appreciated the opportunity to get creative and learn something new. The afternoon was very successful and lots of fun was had, even if it did get quite competitive!

A big well done to Ms. Karmarkar who was by far the star student of the class with her undefeated creative flair.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the Rangoli workshop a massive success!

Ms S. Barrett

(Head of Year 8 & Art Teacher)

Year 8 Pop Art Work

Year 8 Have been studying Pop Artist ‘Roy Lichtenstein’ in Art & Design. Roy Fox Lichtenstein was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Please take a look at some of the wonderful work they have produced.

Men's Mental Health Events

In November, we organised a Staff vs. Staff football match to mark men's mental health awareness month.  It had a great turnout, with a number of Year 11s volunteering to help and also attended the match. We were able to raise around £330 which we donated to three men's mental health charities!

Marvin Sordell, an ex-HHS student and former professional football player also came to speak to a group of students about his journey with mental health, students engaged really well.

Update from Welfare

Inhalers & Epipens

We want learners with medical conditions to carry their inhalers and epi-pens in school is important for their safety. These life-saving devices provide rapid relief during critical moments, ensuring immediate response in case of emergencies such as asthma attacks or allergic reactions. By having these medications on hand at all times, learners gain a sense of empowerment and security, enabling them to actively participate in school activities without the constant worry of being caught unprepared. Timely access to inhalers and epipens can be a matter of life or death. Please check that your child has theirs in their bag or coat pocket.

Expiry dates

Finally, it is equally important that all medicines in school are within their expiry dates. Expired inhalers and epi-pens lose their efficacy, compromising the safety of children with medical conditions. Therefore, please check regularly the expiry dates of your child's medications and promptly replace any that have expired. Maintaining up-to-date medication ensures that learners are adequately equipped to manage their health conditions.

Where to Find Help

This week we have issued learners with 'Where to Find Help Cards' from the Molly Rose Foundation.

These cards are a handy reminder of some of the vital sources of help and support available, especially for young people. We ask all our learners to remember, when times are tough, please don't face your problems alone.  Talk to someone you trust.  Sometimes it's difficult to talk to someone you know so these sources of information and support give a useful outlet for learners to seek safe support themselves.

Mr M. Jukes

(Deputy Headteacher/DSL)

Detentions

For a more detailed explanation as to why your child has received a detention, parents/carers should be contacting the teacher that gave their child the detention. If you have not received a response after contacting the teacher, please then get into contact your child's Head of Year.

Staying Safe

The Metropolitan Police have asked Harrow High to remind our parents/carers that robberies against children spike in the run-up to Christmas and in early January. Please encourage your child not to show or wear expensive items in public.

D&T Coursework Deadline

All D&T learners must complete the pages below to meet their coursework deadline. The pages in yellow need to be amended to ensure our learners meet their MTG.

If any learner fails to meet this deadline, their parents will be invited into school to discuss their progress.

 Christmas Has Arrived in MFL

This year the MFL department is feeling more Christmassy than ever before! Since mid November, we have held a Duck Treasure Hunt (some teachers might have been confused when encountering some very excited students going from class to class looking for our Christmas "patos", "anatre" and ducks, trying to find out their names).

The MFL department has also organised "Amigo Invisible" (Spanish for Secret Santa) with Year 11 Spanish students. Learners got really involved and they all brought beautifully wrapped presents for each other.

We hope these activities, along with the fantastic festive decorations adorned in Ms Ortega's classroom, have helped spread lots of holiday cheer across the school!

Ms E.

MFL PenPal Programme - "Letter Together"

For the first time, the MFL department has started a letter exchange programme with a school in Badajoz, Spain. In this club, called "Letter Together", Harrow High School learners write letters in Spanish to an assigned penpal, and then receive letters from them in English, as those students are learning English as a foreign language in Spain. This is just one of the four extra curricular clubs that MFL is offering this school year.

The 16 learners participating in the programme have now prepared their handwritten letters in Spanish and put them in their envelopes, some even with little presents for their penpals! These have now been sent to Spain and it's just a matter of time until we receive their penpals' responses!

New Parent App coming soon

We are excited to announce that we will be launching the Arbor App in the New Year.

It is great to hear your positive feedback surrounding more parental communication since our adoption of Arbor in September. You will have received a number of positive emails about your child’s behaviour and we will now be able to keep you informed about your child’s life at school in an even more accessible way.

You will be able to log into Arbor to see and update your child’s information and get live updates. The automated emails you have already been receiving to notify of a reward or a sanction, will be accessed within our app. We will also communicate with you about key school events and vital updates from our school community.

We will send further communication on the Parent Arbor app and how to register at the start of next year. Please look out for this information and register your child when prompted. Please note that we will be shortly dispensing with the SIMS app we currently use.

We hope you are looking forward to using this new feature as much as we are!
