Learning the dewey decimal system

The Dewey Decimal System was started by Melvil Dewey in 1876. Many libraries use the Dewey Decimal System to classify and organize non-fiction books. Using this system makes it easier to find the books students are looking for, however Dewey is not a perfect system; not all books fit neatly into a single number.

The major Dewey Decimal divisions are:

000 - Generalities

100 - Philosophy & Psychology

200 - Religion

300 - Social Science

400 - Language

500 - Natural Science & Mathematics

600 - Technology & Applied Sciences

700 - Arts

800 - Literature

900 - Geography & History

As you can see, there are ten major divisions or classes. These areas are further divided into subsections by 10s. For example, Geography & History (900) breaks up into:

910 Geography and travel

920 Biography, genealogy, insignia

930 History of the ancient world

940 General history of Europe

950 General history of Asia, Far East

960 General history of Africa

970 General history of North America

980 General history of South America

990 General history of other areas
