School Closure Update - April 17, 2020

Today, April 17th, Governor Pritzker announced that he will be extending the school closure through the end of the school year. All students will continue with their remote learning through the end of the school year. Please make sure that your students are engaging in learning activities provided by their teachers during this time. Additional information will come out soon regarding the collection of belongings, returning of Chromebooks and textbooks, and other items related to the end of the school year.

Important End of School Year Information

Collection of Student Belongings

In order to create a safe process for families and students to pick up their belongings, we have developed a schedule for pickups. Student belongings will be bagged and handed to families when they pull up to the school. Families will not need to get out of their cars. The pickup schedule is by your student’s last name. The collection time is from 8:00-3:00. If this time does not work for you, please contact your building principal to schedule a time. If students have different last names within a family, please only choose one date to attend.

May 18: A-E

May 19: F-J

May 20: K-O

May 21: P-T

May 22: U-Z

Chromebook, Textbook and Library Book Return

If you currently have a District-issued Chromebook, you may return your device on your designated collection day. If your student will be participating in summer programming or is currently enrolled in AP classes, you may continue to keep the device if needed. Chromebooks will not be required for students to complete learning activities during the week of May 18th. Students will also need to return their textbooks and library books during the designated collection day.

Medication Collection

If your student still has medication in the nurse’s office, please either pick it up during your designated collection day listed above or contact the school administrator to set up a time to pick up the medication. An administrator or school nurse must be present to give you your child’s medications.

Report Cards

All student report cards will be mailed home at the end of the school year.

Bus Parade - May 4th

On Monday, May 4th, our Transportation Department will be driving the streets of our District to show support for our students. At 1:00, bus drivers will leave our elementary school parking lots to parade around the District. Many staff members will be in cars following the buses. Have your student(s) ready to wave as the buses pass!

Family Remote Learning Results

Thank you to everyone who participated in our remote learning surveys. Our administrators have been reviewing your feedback in order to make decisions that will best support our students and families during this time.

Virtual Meetings

In the coming days, teachers will be sharing plans with students to do virtual end of year celebrations with their classes. We recognize that many of our students miss their interactions with classmates and teachers. Throughout remote learning, we have limited video conferencing in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We encourage our teachers, students, and families to find ways to maintain our connections now and throughout the summer.

Honoring the Class of 2020

In an effort to make these last few weeks as memorable as possible for our seniors, Harlem High School is planning the following activities for the Class of 2020.

May 13: Virtual Senior Awards Night - TBA

May 21: Virtual Baccalaureate - 7:00 pm

May 23: Virtual Graduation - 10:00 am

June 5: Junior/Senior Prom (looking at possible later date)
