One of the many ways that HCIS is unique in the Duluth area is our Symposium course offerings. These are intensive, single subject classes that run for 5-6 days, allowing students to focus deeply on a specific area of study. Symposiums take place twice during the school year:
Winter Symposium (1 class, 5 days): Held during the first week of January, right after Winter Break, Winter Symposium gives students the chance to explore Duluth’s local offerings through courses like Curling, Outdoor Adventures, Square Dancing with Children, and more.
Spring Symposium (2 classes, 5 and 6 days): Offered in the last week of May and the first week of June, after the second semester, Spring Symposium provides students with opportunities to take part in activities such as Sailing, hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, Trail Restoration, and other outdoor experiences.
These courses are designed to engage students in hands on, experiential learning outside of the traditional classroom setting.

As part of our commitment to Global Citizenship, HCIS requires students to participate in two Service Learning Symposiums. These courses focus on service and community building, with at least 60% of the time spent on hands-on service activities.
Some of our offerings include:
Dancing with Children- Students travel to area schools and dance with children as well as traveling to nursing homes.
Cooking for a Cause- Students prepare meals for donation to Loaves and Fishes, an organization that supports people experiencing homelessness.
Habitat for Humanity- Students partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve homes in Duluth, engaging in tasks such as light construction, carpentry, painting, and office work
We are always looking for community partners to enrich our students' learning experiences + service opporunities!
