The Last Supper

The Last Supper

“One of you will betray me,” Jesus said gently. Of course, It was the quote from the stoty of The Last Supper!!! Leonardo Da Vinci imagine how Jesus celebrate his final meal. The last supper took place on the first day of Passover. Jesus sent his disciples ahead into the city to prepare a meal to celebrate Passover. Passover is the remembrance of Israel being freed from slavery to Egypt and specifically when the angel of death passed over the homes of the Israelites that had lambs blood over the doors.

The painting is enormous. It's about 460 x 880 cm. Da Vinci began working on it in 1495, and finished in 1498. Da Vinci untertook this gigantic project because his employer requested he do so. The Duke decided he wanted this particular religious scene of Jesus and the Apostles at the Last Supper painted, and Leonardo decided painting it made perfect financial sense. "The Last Supper" is remarkable because the disciples are all displaying very human, identifiable emotions. The biblical scene had certainly been painted before. The technical in "The Last Supper" is also incredible. You can see that every single element of the painting directs one's attention straight to the midpoint of the composition, Jesus's head. It's the greatest example of one point perspective ever created.
