Hello! For those of you who may not know me, my name is Matthew Pomel and I am the Vocal / General Music Teacher at Salem Drive and Mountview Road Schools. This year, I am looking forward to helping your children discover the joys of music. In order to do this, the students will be taking part in a variety of music activities including: singing, playing instruments, creating music, listening to music, and moving to music. All of these activities are part of the National Standards for Music Education and are designed to help each child develop musical skills and to become aware of and appreciate many eclectic genres of music.
To provide you with a little background on myself, I am a veteran music educator with over 20 years of experience in the elementary music classroom. I possess a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education as well as a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership. In Hanover Township, I have been recognized as a Hanover Township “Teacher of the Year” and throughout my tenure have organized student performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the American Young Voices mass-concert experience.
Some other rewarding educational experiences that I have been able to bring to the Hanover Township elementary music program include leading my students to perform and record a custom musical arrangement of “We Are the World” (that was featured in an international environmental consortium in conjunction with the Chinese Department of Environmental Protection), bringing renowned choral music clinicians to work directly with our students, organizing a “composer in residence” program, commissioning an original choral music composition, and leading our 5th grade chorus to be recognized as a finalist in a statewide NJ Christmas Choir Contest. As a composer of choral music myself, I am published internationally through the Hal Leonard Corporation and am an active member of ASCAP. Apart from teaching music in Hanover Township, I am also an amateur actor who has performed locally throughout northern and central New Jersey and am an active musical director for local theater programs.
I look forward to a wonderful year of music with your child(ren). Please watch for additional information about our upcoming Winter Concerts as well as many other special performance opportunities!

“Young Children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children who do not receive musical training. Musically trained children performed better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy, verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics, and IQ.”
