School Information

All of Hampton's Elementary Schools are named for people who played an important role in the history of our city. Tucker-Capps, has the distinction of being the only school named for two historical figures.

Captain William Tucker and Mr. William Capps were two outstanding leaders of the Colonial Period. These two gentlemen came to America in 1610 and settled in the town that was then known as Kecoughtan. America's first legislative assembly met at the Jamestown church on July 30, 1619. By order of the governor, there were two representatives from each town. Kecoughtan was one of these towns and its delegates were William Capps and Captain William Tucker, who was the new commander of the fort at Old Point Comfort. On July 31, 1619, one of the first acts of the first session of the General Assembly of Virginia was to grant a petition brought by Tucker and Capps to change the Indian name of Kecoughtan to the name Elizabeth City. The name Elizabeth honors the oldest daughter of England's monarch James I. Much later, this area was renamed Hampton.

Tucker-Capps Elementary School was erected in September of 1962. It is located on Wellington Drive in the North Hampton area. In 1979, it was designated as a fundamental school.

What is a fundamental school?

Parents/guardians of students in kindergarten through fifth grade must complete an application. After completing the application, students are placed on a waiting list. Based on student enrollment at each grade level, the principal invites students from the waiting list to attend. Additionally, parents and students must review and sign the Fundamental School Contract.
