What are reference sources?  

Reference sources include dictionaries, encyclopedia, atlases, almanacs, or directories.  They can be located in print or online.

When should they be used?

Reference sources are helpful at the beginning of a research project to build background knowledge, locate keywords, find citations to other sources, and verify the validity of other sources.  Be aware that reference sources should only be used for background knowledge and not be cited in the final paper.
