HEALTH EDUCATION I (732015)
Level 2
• Credit: 1/2 credit required
• Students will study a variety of health concepts to enable them to set lifelong health goals. These concepts include: the Endocrine System, Nutrition, Healthy Living, Substance Abuse Prevention (to include the dangers of opioids), CPR/First Aid, Violence Prevention (to include dating violence), and Family Life Education.
• Students will be trained in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators, including hands-on-practice of the skills (required for graduation).
HEALTH II & DRIVER EDUCATION (742515)
Level 2
• Credit: ½ credit required course
• The course is a combination of health and driver education
• Students will acquire an understanding of health and wellness concepts and knowledge. They will develop a conceptual understanding of the issues related to achieving and maintaining personal health. Topics of study include: Health Literacy, Substance Abuse Prevention (to include opioid abuse), Mental and Emotional Health, Violence Prevention (to include dating violence) and Family Life Education.
• Drive Education classroom instruction prepares students for the driver education laboratory (Behind the Wheel) which is offered after school hours.
• Behind the Wheel program registrations can be completed at the home or mailed to: Hampton City Schools, Attention: Driver’s Education, 1 Franklin Street, Hampton, VA 23669
• Applications for Behind the Wheel may be secured from the school counseling department or the physical education department at your school.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION I (731015)
Level 2
• Credit: ½ credit required course
• PE I offers a variety of physical activates designed to encourage and prepare student to be active for life
• Activities may include but are not limited to sport activities, lifetime physical activities and fitness education
• Students will develop a personal fitness plan
PHYSICAL EDUCATION II (741015)
Level 2
• Credit: ½ credit required course
• PE II offers a variety of physical activities designed to promote lifetime activity
• Activities are designed to encourage students to become proficient in individual, dual or team sport, or other lifetime physical activities
• Students will continue to improve the development of a personal fitness program
WELLNESS EDUCATION ELECTIVES
PERSONAL FITNESS (751040 / 751045)
Empowers students to take charge of their physical well-being by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to cultivate a healthy and active lifestyle through a combination of practical exercises, theoretical insights, and personalized goal setting.
Students will develop a deep understanding of fitness principles, nutrition, and the importance of maintaining a balanced and sustainable approach to physical wellness.
LIFETIME ACTIVITY (751050 / 751055)
Students will embark on a journey to explore a diverse array of physical activities and sports that can be enjoyed throughout their lives.
Provides a comprehensive introduction to various sports and physical activities that promote lifelong wellness, fitness, and enjoyment through a combination of practical experience, theoretical knowledge, and skill development.
Students will gain a deeper understanding of the physical, mental, and social benefits that participating in sports can offer.
DUAL ENROLLMENT WELLNESS COURSES
DUAL ENROLLMENT HEALTH 110: PERSONAL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH (763010)
Introduces students to the basic concepts of health and dimensions of wellness through exploration of a variety of personal health topics
Identifies factors that affect the health status of individuals in addition to health promotion and disease prevention at the personal and community level
Students earn 3 VPCC credits and 1 high school credit
DUAL ENROLLMENT HEALTH 215: PERSONAL STRESS MANAGEMENT (763020)
Provides a basic understanding of stress and explores its physical, psychological and social effects
Includes the relationships among stress and change, self-evaluation, sources of stress, and ways to develop current coping skills for handling stress
Students earn 3 VPCC credits and 1 high school credit
DUAL ENROLLMENT HEALTH 143: MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY I (763040)
Provides an understanding of medical abbreviations and terms. Includes the study of prefixes, suffixes, word stems, and technical terms with emphasis on proper spelling, pronunciation, and usage.
Students earn 3 VPCC credits and 1 high school credit
