As we come to the final days of February and conclude our commemoration of Black History Month, the Wesley Center wanted to reflect on the knowledge gained, connections made, and the unity this month brought within our community. The Muslim Student Association (MSA) in particular, celebrated BHM by taking this opportunity to honor the contributions of black Muslim figures who have left an indelible mark on history. Over the past 2 weeks, MSA hosted two remarkable events that shed light on notable black Muslim figures through engaging discussions.
During their general meeting on 02/15, MSA organized a lecture-style event where Fatima and Hanan, president and vice president of MSA, hosted a presentation on significant Muslim black figures. Hanan delved into the lives of Bilal Abu Rabah, Fatima Bernawi and Muhammad Ali, while Fatuma shared the remarkable stories of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Malcolm X.
The presentation was informative and sparked a lively discussion within the group. The students shared their thoughts, and reflected on the impact these figures had on both the Muslim and black communities. Some of the Somai-Muslim attendees and MSA members shared that the open dialogue allowed them to deepen their understanding of the intersectionality of their identities.
MSA in continuation of the Important black Muslim figures event hosted a movie night featuring the documentary "Blood Brothers - Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali." This movie explored the relationship between these two iconic figures as well as the struggles and triumphs they’ve been through.
Following the screening there was a discussion facilitated by Fatuma about themes the group noticed in the movie and exchanged personal perspectives. It was heartening to witness the enthusiasm and passion MSA members had as they actively participated in dissecting the relationship between Malcolm X & Muhammad Al.
