After 28 years as a university professor, I retired in 2023. Though my work appears under several different names, I'm now writing as Máel Sheridan.
Most recently, I was please to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Kathleen A. McNamara, Sara Semborski, Susie Skarl, and Sheri Swokowski on a new article, "Transgender service in the U.S. military: A scoping review." It has been published in International Journal of Transgender Health and is currently available online.
I am co-editor, with Bree Fram, of the books With Valor and Visibility: The Next Chapter of Transgender Military Service (2025, Forged in Fire Press) and With Honor and Integrity: Transgender Troops in Their Own Words (2021, NYU Press). I authored both The U.S. Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy: A Reference Handbook (2007, Praeger) and Camouflage Isn't Only for Combat: Gender, Sexuality, and Women in the Military (1998, NYU Press).
In addition to other work over the last 30+ years, I published the chapters, "Policy Whiplash: Transgender Military Service in the Twenty-first Century" in The Rowman & Littlefield Handbook of Transgender Studies (J.E. Sumerau, Ed. 2023), "Transgender Military Service: A Snapshot in Time," in The Palgrave International Handbook of Gender and the Military, (Woodward and Duncanson, Eds., 2017), and in the journal Sociological Inquiry, the article "'Welcome! Oh, wait…’ Transgender Military Service in a Time of Uncertainty” (2020).
