Youth Takeover Event At The Design Museum London

One year as a Young Creative at the Design Museum London, by Noah W.

I have been a member of the Young Creatives Team at the Design Museum for the past 15 months. The Young Creatives Programme is open for young people aged 14-19 years in the Royal Boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Westminster, Ealing, Brent, Harrow, Barnet, Camden and the City of London.

The group meets on a regular basis for meet-ups, weekend masterclasses and short courses. The classes are held by designers in different fields, for example, product designers, wood sculptures, architects, graphic designers and filmmakers.

The program culminated in a public event at the Design Museum, Saturday 2 December 2017. The day was divided into three parts: the exhibition of our work and a certificate ceremony as well as workshops, debates and talks until the museum’s closing time. This year was important for the Design Museum’s Young Creatives programme because depending on our success, the funding would, or would not be continued. We were very happy to learn that we secured funding for next year with our creations. I have attached some of my pieces so you have an idea of the different types of work we created.

I truly recommend this programme to anyone interested in the creative world, be it design, film, architecture or graphic design. I learned a lot and didn’t mind the time invested at all. The only criticism I would voice is that I had to miss the most exciting course of the programme because it took place during the summer holidays. They built a whole film set from scratch and made it into a film.

I am still at the programme until after graduation, so if anyone wants to ask me questions about it or would like to come along to one of the sessions to speak to one of the team members, you are welcome to talk to me at school or drop me a line via jranson@halcyonschool.com
