HACC Yeah®! News

Greetings, HACC supporters!

November is Native American Heritage Month. This month serves to highlight and celebrate the richness and contributions that Native Americans add to the world. Additionally, we recognize and mourn the struggles and trauma that their community has endured for centuries. Here at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, we stand in support of the Native American community, past and present.

Welcome to our newsletter, HACC Yeah®! News

We will continue to share relevant information and keep you “in the know” as we serve and support HACC students.

In this difficult time, we want to share with you the ways HACC and the HACC Foundation are doing our part during the global coronavirus pandemic. Please visit hacc.edu/Coronavirus for more information.

Please contact foundation@hacc.edu if you have any questions or need additional information.

HACC Medical Assistant Students Benefit From Support From the HACC Foundation and the Justamere Foundation

The College is offering its Medical Assistant Certificate Program as a part-time, noncredit evening program in January 2023 to address a shortage in this high-demand field. Eligible Dauphin County residents can receive up to 90% of the cost of HACC’s tuition, thanks to the generosity of the HACC Foundation and Justamere Foundation. With the tuition assistance, each student will pay only $600 plus the cost of medical and background clearances.

Linnie S. Carter, Ph.D., APR, the vice president of college advancement at HACC and executive director of the HACC Foundation, said, “This partnership involves the largest community college in Pennsylvania, a foundation focused on generational poverty and the medical profession. For us, this is an ideal coalition to ensure that Central Pennsylvanians have trained medical assistants when we need them – in fact, BEFORE we need them. We are grateful for the Justamere Foundation’s investment in HACC students and our community. We will uphold our commitment in this partnership in hopes this support will continue in the future.”

Classes begin Jan. 23, 2023, and will be held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Instruction will be a combination of in person and virtual classes.

Please share this information with interested future students who live in Dauphin County. To schedule an appointment and get further details about the tuition assistance, please email jafoster@hacc.edu or call 717-221-1354.

Donor Spotlight - Fast Five Interview

The HACC Foundation is grateful for the support of our donors, including HACC employees. In this “Fast Five” series, we are featuring Dr. Ski.

What is your full name?

John J. “SKI” Sygielski

What is your job title?

President and CEO

How long have you worked at HACC?

11 years

Why do you contribute to the HACC Foundation?

I contribute to the HACC Foundation because I see, firsthand, the life-changing difference my investment makes in changing lives, destinies and family trees. I see how a high school student, who had to work to financially support her family, was able to begin her college career with the hopes of becoming a nurse. I see how a single parent was able to graduate from HACC and help her family become self-sufficient. I see how a recently laid-off individual was able to attend HACC and become a certified welder, something he wanted to become his entire life. Finally, I contribute because I was the recipient of the generosity of others and would not be responding to this question if it were not for many individuals, who I never knew but who believed in me through their contribution.

If you could share a message with a friend or family member to encourage them to contribute to the HACC Foundation, what would you say?

If you want to invest your hard-earned dollars in an investment that will pay dividends for individuals, families and communities for years to come, please invest in the HACC Foundation. In fact, your investment could help prepare your next physician, nurse, plumber, child’s teacher, accountant and chef at your favorite restaurant.

HACC Foundation Donor Funds Live Fire Training

A HACC Foundation donor provided $10,800 to fund live fire training for the fire departments of Lower Paxton and West Hanover Townships. These trainings were imperative to the efficacy and efficiency of the departments' personnel and equipment.

The funding provided a total of 48 hours of live fire training for the following departments:

  • Colonial Park Fire Company

  • Paxtonia Fire Company

  • Linglestown Fire Department

  • West Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Company

In each of these training evolutions, the volunteer firefighters were able to engage live fire and utilize their knowledge and skills to become better first responders. Ultimately, the training will save lives and property by providing first responders with the most realistic training available.
