Greetings, HACC supporters!
Disability Pride Month is a celebration for and by people living with disabilities. The Disability Pride Movement has identified a flag symbolizing the diverse disabled community and their varied experiences. The original lightning bolt flag designed in 2019 by Ann Magill was modified in 2021 in response to criticism on the potential visual triggers due to brightness of colors and the lightning bolt shape. The current Disability Pride Flag uses color to represent the diversity of disability: green for sensory, blue for emotional and psychiatric, white for non-apparent and undiagnosed, gold for neurodivergence and red for physical disabilities. The charcoal black background honors those lost to ableism and protests systemic mistreatment. The diagonal band represents breaking barriers, making the flag a unifying symbol of pride, advocacy and inclusion. Here at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, we recognize and value the talents that disabled individuals bring to the HACC community and beyond.
