September's Spotlight on EdTech Award Winner:

Karen Wilson from South Middle School

Spotlight on Edtech

Each month, the Academic Services Department would like to recognize a Grain Valley teacher who is exploring new ideas in teaching and learning with technology. The teacher will be chosen based on their partnership with the instructional technology coaches or through nomination from an administrator or fellow teacher.

Karen Wilson has fully embraced the Future Ready Librarian Framework in her library at South Middle School. Karen has a Makerspace club that meets during Soar, and they are having so much fun! One group of students designed their own video game using Bloxels, and another student even built a solar powered robot. Karen said this about her group of students, “The Makerspace has impacted students by giving them a chance to just play and create new things.” Every few weeks she will get a new group of students. Karen also has a media team that is writing, filming, and producing their own newscast each week with the happenings of South Middle School.

Another new project that Karen is exploring this year is monthly library challenges for the students at South. These challenges are a great way get students engaged in the library and are allowing Karen to explore some new tech tools. During September, students shared reflections of banned books using FlipGrid and next month they will be “tweeting” about books using Padlet. Karen summarizes her new adventures by stating, “With all of the new things we are doing this year, the library is no longer just a place to get books.”
