MCK Primary/Lower School - Parent Cultural Connect

Cultural Connect is a series of presentations for parents on social history, art and culture. A tradition since 2015, Mr. King takes us on adventures from the gilded age, 1990’s South Beach Art Deco times, and everything in between.

Mr. King was a faculty member at Gulliver for 30 years and has taken generations of students on a journey through the mysteries of the ancient world. Now, he shares that journey with our Gulliver parents through Cultural Connect.

The Gilded Age Bohemians

The Deering brothers were not your typical Gilded Age millionaires. Their world was that of artists, writers, and fantasies set in Spanish castles and a palatial villa here in Miami. Join us as we discover their world and the artistic masterpiece that eventually became the Villa Vizcaya.

Havana was the glamor capital of the world after WWII. Just thirty minutes by seaplane from Coconut Grove, a world of mystery, beauty and adventure awaited, all set amid 400 years of magnificent architecture. A mother from Gulliver could drop off her children in the morning, fly to Havana, have lunch at the Hotel Nacional, take in a fashion show at Dior and visit friends in the mansions that lined the Vedado before flying back in time to pick her children up from school. It was the bohemian mecca for artists, writers, café society and movie stars. From the dazzling shows of the Tropicana to the elegance of the Dior salon to the Avant grade nightclubs and hotels, Havana was the place to be. The Duke of Windsor often quipped, “My wife loves Havana, it is so close to Dior”.

In the words of Shakespeare it truly was “a dream too sweet to be substantial”.

Field Trip to Little Havana culinary walking tour

$85.00 per person

Join us for the next Cultural Connect field trip as we visit Little Havana for a culinary walking tour on Thursday, March 9. We will tour art galleries, shops, and restaurants while learning more about this historical Miami neighborhood.

Tickets for this tour are $85 per person and include round-trip transportation from the Marian C. Krutulis PK-8 Campus. Please plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m., as the bus will depart promptly at 9:00 a.m.
