World Language Department Mission, Vision, and Goals

The mission of El Capitan’s World Language Department is the development of communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while promoting an understanding of diverse cultures.

El Capitan High School seeks to promote linguistic and cultural literacy while cultivating a lifelong appreciation and enthusiasm for languages and the cultures they reflect. We believe that all students can learn a new language and that a global mindset is a necessity and an asset in today’s society. The study of world languages is an interdisciplinary pursuit and it intrinsically helps students view issues from a global perspective; students gain an increased knowledge of their relationship to the world by developing an appreciation for other viewpoints and a deeper understanding of their own culture and the world at large.

Students will be challenged to develop their proficiency in an interactive, cooperative environment that emphasizes both oral and written expression through authentic linguistic experiences.

-Students will sequentially advance their skills both orally and in writing in the 3 areas of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.

-Lessons will incorporate the five C’s from ACTFL: Communication, Comparisons, Connections, Community, and Culture.

-Students will be given the opportunity to experience authentic language situations.

-Students will explore various writing structures.

-Students will build their written communication skills from basic sentences and paragraphs to essays and research papers.

-Students will progress in their language abilities along a course pathway leading to the AP Language and/or Literature Exams.
