rummy card game rules

Rummy is a classic card game beloved for its blend of strategy, luck, and skill. The most common version is Gin Rummy, played by two people with a standard 52-card deck. The core objective is to form your hand into sets and sequences, known as melds, before your opponent.

A game begins with each player receiving ten cards. The remaining deck forms the stock, and the top card is placed face-up to start the discard pile. On each turn, you must draw one card—either the top card from the stock or the top card from the discard pile—and then end your turn by discarding one card to the pile. Your goal is to create melds: a sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, like 4-5-6 of hearts, while a set is three or four cards of the same rank, such as three queens.

The key moment is when you decide to “go out” by knocking. You can only knock if the total point value of your unmelded cards, your deadwood, is less than or equal to ten points. Cards are valued with face cards worth ten points, aces worth one point, and numbered cards worth their face value. When you knock, you lay down your melds and announce your deadwood total. Your opponent then gets a final turn to lay down their own melds and try to reduce their deadwood. If your deadwood total is lower, you score the difference between the two totals. A special victory called gin occurs if you have zero deadwood, scoring a bonus plus your opponent’s full deadwood count.

The game continues until one player reaches the predetermined winning score, usually 100 points. Success in Rummy requires keen observation, memory of discarded cards, and strategic decisions about which cards to pick up and which to release. Its elegant rules create a timeless and engaging battle of wits at the card table.
