A standard game uses one or two decks of 52 cards, including jokers which act as wild cards. Each player is dealt a fixed number of cards, typically 10 or 13 depending on the variant. The remaining cards form the closed draw pile, with one card placed face-up to start the discard pile.
The primary goal is to arrange all your cards into valid combinations. A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 5-6-7 of hearts. A set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits, like three Queens or four 8s. A joker can substitute for any card to complete a combination.
On your turn, you must draw one card—either the top card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile—and then discard one card from your hand to the discard pile. This continuous process of picking and discarding allows you to slowly meld your hand.
The game culminates when a player successfully arranges all their cards into valid sequences and sets, with at least one pure sequence (without a wild card) in most variants. This player then declares their hand by placing their combinations face-up on the table. The other players must also show their arranged cards, with ungrouped cards counting as points against them. The player with the least total points wins the round, with points often carrying over in a multi-round game.
