Career-Life Education

Why create this resource?

The 2018/19 school year in British Columbia [BC] marked the start of implementing BC’s new curriculum for Grades 10 through 12, a key component of which was the introduction of a revamped, more rigorous Career and Life Education curricula. The newly introduced curriculum courses, Career Life Education" [CLE] and "Career Life Connections" [CLC], are a requirement for graduation from BC schools, and have to be assessed in order to provide a letter grade upon completion. This is in stark contrast to the previous model of simply stating ‘requirements met’.

This project evolved from two parallel situations : A school based need to find a viable solution to providing meaningful, accountable career and life eduction that not only meet the requirements of the new BC career-life curriculum, but is also able to be delivered effectively within our already busy school timetable. My VIU studies in OLTD requiring a focus for applying my learning into research papers and projects. My interest in career-life education continued into my MEDL studies, hence this effort to create an online resource comprising information and links to materials and methodologies that may be beneficial in implementing career-life education programs. The project was further fuelled by my perceived shortcomings of past career and life education curriculum delivery methods which seemed disconnected and ineffective. As educators, I believe that all levels of the system should provide exceptional learning in this area. After all, a fulfilling life and career is what we all desire and for which should be preparing.
