It has been another busy week here at Brunswick Park.

Year 6 have been on their residential trip and have had a fantastic time, taking part in activities such as abseiling, hiking, sensory trails, canoeing, giant swings, problem solving and laser tag. We wish them a safe journey as they make their way home this evening.

Year 3 have completed their two weeks of swimming and completely smashed it. Well done year 3.

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their Florence Nightingale workshop with Freshwater Theatre Company on Tuesday. They dressed up, shared their knowledge and even got to bandage each other! Well done Year 2.

Sensory Stories Outreach workshop

Sense is a registered charity who believe that everyone should have the opportunity to connect with others and be included in the world. We have been extremely lucky in securing a space on their outreach 'Connect and Play' project. We will be participating in a six week Sensory Stories programme, which supports interaction and communication. During our second week, we explored the traditional tale 'The Three Little Pigs' further. Everyone had a fabulous time exploring the available sensory activities (wet/dry messy play and crafts) linked around the shared story. This week we explored crushed digestive biscuits, spaghetti, rice and the children absolutely enjoyed the 'oobleck'. This is a mixture of cornflour and water, which is a highly engaging sensory material because it acts as a non-Newtonian fluid, rapidly shifting between a solid and a liquid based on the pressure applied to it. We are looking forward to exploring a new story next week.

Strength and Learning Through Horses – Our First Session

This week, eight of our pupils attended their first Strength and Learning Through Horses session, and what a fantastic start it was!

The children began their visit with a tour of the premises, learning about the different areas and how the horses are cared for. They then had the opportunity to try on all the specialist equipment, including riding hats and boots, which created lots of excitement and enthusiasm.

The group quickly got stuck into their jobs, helping to clean the horses areas using shovels and wheelbarrows. The children showed great teamwork and determination as they worked together to complete the tasks. They were then rewarded with the chance to meet their first two horses, Charlie and Ava, who made a wonderful impression on everyone.

The Strength and Learning Through Horses programme will provide the children with opportunities to work towards AQA qualifications while developing a range of important life skills. Through working with the horses, the pupils will build their confidence, planning, organisational and communication skills. They will also develop resilience as they are encouraged to take on new challenges and step outside their comfort zones while working with these magnificent animals. The programme promotes teamwork and cooperation, helping the children to develop positive and healthy relationships with their classmates.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their first session and represented the school brilliantly. We are very proud of their enthusiasm, hard work and willingness to try something new, and we look forward to sharing more of their achievements in future newsletters.

Fun Run Superstars

On Friday 13th June, our Brunswick Park students took on the Brunswick Park Fun Run course. In hot and sunny conditions, the children showed incredible physical and mental strength as they completed the challenge. Whether they were pushing themselves to achieve a personal goal, enjoying the surroundings and experience, or supporting their friends along the route, every single child crossed the finish line beaming with pride.

As part of this challenge, we also offered families the opportunity to fundraise, with 50% of the money going to North London Hospice and 50% supporting school sport. The generosity and efforts of our children and families have astounded us all, raising an amazing £1,012 so far.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in our community for your contributions and for helping to make this such a memorable event for the children.

Year 6 Cricket Festival

On 5th June, a group of Year 6 children ventured to Finchley Cricket Club to take part in a festival of cricket. Supported by the club, the team were given brand-new shirts and looked like superstars.

All the players demonstrated a variety of bowling, batting and fielding skills as they competed against other schools and developed their understanding of the game. Led by Hammad and Ayaan, who already had great experience of events like this, the team developed their skills throughout the day.

Despite a couple of narrow defeats early in the tournament, the team showed great improvement in the final match, winning by a staggering 100 runs. It was a fantastic day out with lots of opportunities to play and develop a new range of skills.

We hope the children have enjoyed all the cricket that has been taking place in school over the last few months, including the coaching sessions in Years 4 and 5 from Kapital Kids Cricket.

Stronger Relationships Programme

Thanks to Barnet’s investment in reducing parental conflict, all parents and carers in the borough now have free access to a fully facilitated, six-week online parenting course: SFSC: Stronger Relationships.

Barnet commissioned this programme, delivered by national charity Race Equality Foundation, as part of the Dept of Works and Pensions, Reducing Parental Conflict Programme. The course is designed for co-parents (together or apart) who may be struggling to communicate or manage stress at home. It aims to reduce conflict, strengthen co-parenting relationships, and improve outcomes for children, particularly important as we approach the summer holidays, when tensions can rise in households.

The course is:

Free and flexible: six weekly self-study modules and six weekly live Zoom group discussions
Inclusive: trauma-informed and culturally responsive
Accessible: evening sessions available, no referral needed
Confidential: parents sign up directly, and no information is shared

Who is it for?

Any parent or carer of a child aged 0–18 living in Barnet – especially helpful for:

Separated or co-parenting families
Parents navigating SEND, financial stress or family transitions
Families preparing for the move to secondary school
