This newsletter contains information on all of the Brunswick Park sports action taking place over the Spring term. Keep up to date with our sports teams, news about festivals or competitions we have attended and the inspirational sports people we have been celebrating. We will also be sharing lots of information about a range of sports and activities that children can get involved with outside of school. We hope you enjoy!
On March 12th, a group of 20 dancers from Year 4, 5 and 6 travelled to the Arts Depot to perform at the Barnet Dance Festival. Schools from all over the borough took part in a celebration of dance and demonstrated what they had been working on. As always Miss Georgia had choreographed a wonderful routine full of drama, technique and expression that was clearly one of the stand out performances of the night. Our students showcased all of their talent and hard work putting on a marvellous show. Rehearsing every lunchtime for the last couple of months had clearly paid off as they entranced the audience with their wonderful routine and finished to an enormous ovation. A huge well done to everyone involved and thank you to all of the families that came to support.
Over the last few weeks our year 4 students have shown off their skills, teamwork and determination in the boys and girls year 4 football tournaments. Both teams did a fantastic job flying through the group stages before both being cruelly knocked out on penalties in the quarter finals.
Despite the disappointment of the penalty shootouts, we were so proud of our teams and the ways they supported each other throughout. We can’t wait for more sporting experiences with this group in the future.
Our year 2 students also displayed their football skills over the last half term, representing the school at the Barnet football festivals.
Our girls displayed amazing determination and teamwork to improve their understanding of the game. They loved flying in for tackles, dribbles and celebrating in everyone's success.
The year 2 boys demonstrated their excellent football skills and understanding of the game from their clubs. The Brunswick Park team did not concede a goal the whole time sharing the goals amongst the team while playing some wonderful passing football.
Our Brunswick Park runners displayed amazing stamina, speed and determination to complete the course at the cross country championships. The Oakhill Park course was a mud bath after lots of rain meaning treacherous conditions for both runners and spectators.
There were some brilliant performances on the day with some top ten finishes as well as lots of personal achievement. We were so impressed with the bravery and attitude of all of our children and hopefully it has inspired them to keep running.
For those interested, Junior Parkrun is a timed 2km event any child can take part in. It takes place at Friary Park every Sunday at 9am and gives children a chance to build endurance and resilience as well as enjoy trying to beat their best time.

Brunswick Park students loved showing off thier tag rugby skills on a sunny afternooon in March. In defence our team worked together to to stop the opposition with organisation and pressure. Individuals also diplayed excellent running and evasion skills as they scored tries for the team. In a tough group Brunswick Park finished 3rd losing to eventual winners Livingstone. It was a great afternoon and Mr Hoare was particularly impressed with how the team conducted themselves throughout.
A group of children in Y4, 5 and 6 have had great success competing in the Boccia championships. The inclusive sport allowed our children to experience a competitive event that relied on accuracy, control and strategy. Our team was outstanding, winning the Barnet competition before progressing to represent Barnet in the London Youth Games in February, where they were joined by more team members.
Once again, the team displayed all their skills but just fell short of a medal, finishing as the 4th best team in London. It was an amazing experience and the team should all be immensely proud of themselves.
Brunswick Park were invited to the inaugural NFL Flag Football tournament. This was an incredible opportunity to show what the children have learnt during our NFL P.E lessons.
The day was a huge success with us playing 6 games, winning 3, drawing 2 and losing 1. This meant we finished the day in 3rd place just behind Church Hill in 2nd.
The team showed great attitude throughout the day showing great resilience when we lost our first game. Staying positive they then went on to be undefeated for the rest of the day. The team also were very eager to memorise the plays we had created for them and put them into action on the field.
Girls Football
The girls football season has come to end and what a season it was. The girls only lost 1 game during the season and won every other game. Sadly it wasn't enough to win the league but 2nd place in a incredibly competitive league is an amazing achievement. Well done girls!
Boys Football
Our boys team also had a great season with the team also placing 2nd in the league. The boys displayed our schools sporting values throughout the season incredibly well being gracious in defeat and being admirable winners. Congratulations boys !
Lots of our children have also taken part in a range of wider sports festivals to get active and gain experience in different sports. These range from our Year 5 and 6 netballers to exploring sports such as golf and badminton lower down the school. The children attending these events have show a range brilliant of skills linked to our curriculum. They have displayed great improvement with physical competencies while also developing social, personal and cognitive skills from exploring the different events. During all events Brunswick Park students displayed respect, determination and a joy of movement.
We hope more students can attend some of these events before the end of the year.
Our Year 6 netball team ended their league season with a narrow defeat against Ashmole despite an excellent performance in defence from Lily. Although the team displayed huge improvements over the season, they could not quite clinch the league title finishing in second place. The spirit and understanding of the whole team has come on so much from our first game with everyone displaying so much joy and team spirit throughout the game. The team have been a pleasure to coach and I hope they continue to attend our clubs to engage in Netball.
Barnet Football Club have been part of a community project in our school over the last few moths. Our students in year 4 have had the opportunity to take part in PE sessions run by coaches from the club and will be attending a visit to the stadium in April.
The club have also offered our families free tickets to a recent game, that saw Barnet win 3-1 and extend their lead at the top of the national league. In addition to this free game, many of our students were selected to be player mascots for the day and walked the players out onto the pitch. KS2 children were also surprised by a player visit with first team players Idris Kanu and Adebola Oluwo, who shared their experiences of becoming professional footballers. It was great to hear from the players and build connections with our local club.
Barnet FC are also working hard to return to the Underhill area in the near future with the 'Bring Barnet Back' campaign. So many of us remember growing up with Barnet Football Club local to this area and it would be amazing to have them close by for our community once again. Here at Brunswick park the PE curriculum is designed to support our students with a unique and holistic approach. Our PE philosophy is based on the latest research around effective PE and curriculum guidance as well as being bespoke to our school, our students and our environment. Take a look at our PE mission statement below and the 4 areas of learning we look to focus on throughout the school.
Our mission is to develop the physical, social, cognitive and emotional skills of all students through the vehicle of Physical Education. We want the children to develop a lifelong love of sport and movement, using PE to impact on the holistic development of every child. To achieve this, we aim to equip children with core physical competencies as well as focusing on developing confidence and mastery in these different learning areas. Through a spiral curriculum approach, we have developed units that will revisit key learning themes, allowing progression across a range of different sporting and physical contexts. These themes will build on previous learning to bring about opportunities to improve confidence, depth of learning and mastery in each of our key learning areas.
Using this philosophy we have split our curriculum into 4 areas that show the impact PE can have on the whole child. We have created key values in each of these areas that we hope to develop in our students through the use of PE
