To prepare Tetra amine Copper Sulphate.
Reaction:
Tetra-amine Copper Sulphate is prepared by adding Ammonia to a solution of Copper Sulphate. When Cupric Hydroxide is precipitated which dissolves in excess of ammonia to give deep blue colour. The hydrated tetra-amine copper 2-sulphate and is then precipitated from the solution by adding ethanol.
CuSO4 +4NH3 + H2O → [Cu(NH3)4]SO4.H2O
Tetra amine Cu(II) Sulphate
(Blue Crystals)
Chemicals Required:
Concentrated Ammonia- 10ml
Ethyl Alcohol - 15ml
Copper sulphate- 5gm
Apparatus Required:
Beaker, Glass Road, Glass Funnel, Filter paper, Conical Flask.
Take 5gm of crystalline CuSO4 in 250ml Beaker.
Dissolve it in minimum quantity of water adding a few drops of H2SO4.
Now add concentrated ammonia solution (1:1) to the beaker with constant stirring until the blue precipitate of cupric hydroxide first form completely.
Dissolve to yield a deep blue solution. There should be a smell of ammonia in the beaker.
Now, Add 10-12 ml of ethanol, with constant stiring and keep the beaker on ice bath for about 10 minutes.
Long Needle shaped blue crystals of tetra amine copper(II) sulphate separate out.
Filter this and wash this crystals with a few drops of alcohol and dry them.
Molecular Weight of Copper Sulphate - 159 gm/mol
Molecular Weight Tetra amine copper(II) - 245 gm/mol
If 159 gm of Copper Sulphate gives 245 gm of Tetra amine Copper(II)
Then 5 gm of Copper Sulphate gives ………….
