I have taught at Butler County High School for 19 years, ranging from Math, Health, Reading, Introduction to Chemistry and Physics, and all levels of Chemistry. I did my undergraduate and graduate work at Western Kentucky University with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Psychology and had no intentions of teaching. However, I had two professors, Wayne Mason in the Biology Department and Dr. Lowell Shank, the department head of the Chemistry department at the time that kept encouraging me to teach and placing opportunities in my path. Therefore, I went back to WKU and completed an alternative route for my master's degree in Chemistry Education.
I have served on SBDM as a teacher and currently as a parent, been a board member for Kentucky Science Teacher Association, and taught for WKU as a dual credit instructor. I also serve on the Kentucky Teacher Advisory Council and my district's Superintendent's Advisory Council. I have been searching for years for the right fit for my Rank I certification and this opportunity to earn a teaching certificate in STEM education came along and fit perfectly. I now have two of my former students in my department as colleagues and a fantastic transplant from Florida and we have truly revitalized our department through the addition of STEM.
I’ve always loved teaching science because it is hands-on - but the transformation of integrating engineering has taken it to a whole new level. The students are having deeper conversations about the content while truly becoming independent learners. It’s exhausting at times, messy, and time-consuming, but so much more fun!!
I look forward to sharing my passion for STEM with you!!
