Developing Social Network Capabilities for Graduate Employability
Factsheets for Students and Educators
This cross-university research project explored the capabilities required by graduates to effectively develop and use online and face-to-face professional networks for career development.
Through surveys of graduates that completed their courses between one to four years ago, along with in-depth interviews with graduates 1 - 4 years out who possess highly developed social network capabilities, this project sought to:
- Document the ways in which social networks can be used for career development at graduate level and confirm their value to graduate employability;
- Characterise effective social networking practice at graduate level; and
- Benchmark current graduate social network capability levels and identify opportunities for development in degree programs.
Drawn from the findings of this research, a series of eight factsheets have been developed to support educators and students in understanding the value of social networks for career development and assist students in the development of social network capabilities.
