The South Carolina ASTA Violin and Viola Choir has been a long-standing tradition for Palmetto-state violinists and violists since 2009. It offers a chance for upper-string players of all ages, from near-beginners to professionals, to celebrate their love of their instrument by playing together.

The 2025 event will take place on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, on the beautiful campus of Bob Jones University.

5:30 PM Recital in Recital Hall (Double Basses will be First @ 5:00 PM followed by the Violin / Viola Choir) 

Attire for Recital:

Participants may wear the V&V 2025 shirt with Khakis or Jeans for the concert. OR they may wear a school orchestra shirt or a dress shirt. We ask that participants do not wear leggings or pants with holes in them for the concert.

Deirdre Hutton

Violin Professor, Bob Jones University

Deirdre Hutton has enjoyed a varied career as a teacher, chamber musician and orchestral player. Many of her violin students have gone on to study at prestigious music schools throughout North America including: The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, University of Texas at Austin and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. In addition, her students have been featured on the radio show From the Top and have participated in such summer festivals as the Heifetz Institute, Aspen School of Music, Bowdoin Music Festival, the New York String Seminar, National Youth Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, Meadowmount and National Orchestral Institute.Deirdre completed her Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Eastman School of Music as a student of OlehKrysa. At Northwestern University she was teaching assistant to Almita and Roland Vamos while earning a Master of Music degree.

Additional studies included intensive private study with Itzhak Rashkovsky, Royal College in London. She has given masterclasses through the US and internationally. Deirdre has been violin coach for the Greenville County Youth Orchestra’s Young Artists Orchestra for the last ten years, as well as leading violin sectionals for numerous South Carolina Regional and All State Orchestras. In addition to her work as a teacher Deirdre is an active chamber musician. As violinist and founding member of the Poinsett Piano Trio she has performed concerts throughout the US, Germany and New Zealand over the last decade. http://poinsettpianotrio.com.

She has performed in numerous orchestras in the US and Europe. Deirdre taught at Furman University for 14 years before joining the SCGSAH string faculty full time in 2020-2021 where she is now Instructor of Violin and Chamber Music and this year is also serving as interim Music Department Chair.

Zoe Harbison

Orchestra Director, Abner Creek Middle School

Zoe Harbison originally hails from Charlottesville, VA. She received a Bachelor of Music Education and a Viola Performance Certificate from the University of South Carolina, where she taught at the renowned String Project. She then went on to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA where she received a Master of Music degree in viola performance. After leaving Pittsburgh, she moved to Charleston, where she taught orchestra at C.E. Williams Middle School and played with the Charleston Symphony. Ms. Harbison is currently a tenured member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s viola section and directs the orchestra program at Abner Creek Middle School.
