A new monthly feature with Nutrition Information you can share with your student-athletes

Hydration

Proper hydration delays physical and mental fatigue. Dehydration forces your body to work harder, keeping your from performing your best.

  • Exercise or games longer than 90 minutes, replenishes electrolytes optimizes recovery. Items like this would be Gatorade or Powerade.

    • Before Exercise

      • 500-600mL of water during the two hours before competition. If it makes you feel bloated or heavy, consume less.

    • During exercise

      • 250mL of water every 20 minutes. Add electrolytes if your sessions are longer than 90 minutes.

    • Sip water or sports drinks, do not chug

    • After exercise

      • Consider weighing yourself before and after practice or workouts.

      • 500-700mL for each pound lost

      • add electrolytes if over 90 minutes of exercise

  • Sports Drinks

      • Sessions that last 60-90 minutes you will need to look at adding electrolytes.

      • American College of Sports Med recommends the following

          • 460-490mg/L of sodium

          • 78-195mg/L of potassium

          • 5-10% of carbohydrates
