Communication with Parents

*Please be sure you have registered for the Backpack system. This is the best way to stay connected to your child’s grades and progress in school.*

Progress Reports/Report Cards and Conferences:

• Progress reports will be distributed approximately half way through each quarter ONLY if your child is failing a subject.  

• Report cards are issued every nine weeks.

• Conferences will be held with all parents prior to the end of the 1st quarter.  

• Conferences will be held at other times of the year by parent request and/or teacher request.

Newsletters and Grades

• Newsletters will be emailed every Friday. 

Parents as Partners:  

• I believe education is a three-part responsibility that falls on the child, the teacher, and the parent. I encourage you to be an active participant in your child’s education. Let us work together to give your child the best education possible. You can help by encouraging your child to read, complete homework, and study. I truly believe it "takes a village" to raise a child and I look forward to being a part of your "village" this school year.

Attendance and Tardy Policies

Each student must attend at least 170 of the 180 days to receive credit. Any absence in excess of 10 days may cause the student to lose credit for the year. School begins at 7:45 a.m. Students are considered tardy after 7:45 a.m. Your child will be marked late if he/she arrives in the classroom after the 7:45 am bell. After 7:50 a.m., students will need to stop in the front office to get an admittance slip to the classroom. For additional information regarding attendance and tardy policies, please refer to the student handbook.

Early Dismissals: 

No student may leave school grounds during school hours without permission from the office.  

1. Students who need to leave school early are to present their note signed by the parents to the teacher who will then send the note to the attendance clerk by 8:30am. 

2. The request will be unexcused or excused. 

3. Early dismissals for such things as piano lessons, dance practices, athletic practices, and pleasure trips will not be excused. Students will not be permitted to make up for missed work. 

4. All notes must have the date, student’s name, time of dismissal, the reason for dismissal, the person picking up the student, telephone number where the parent can be reached, and signed by the parent. 

5. All students will be signed out in the office before leaving the school on early dismissals. A parent or authorized adult must sign a student out from the office in order for the student to be released from school. 

6. All students returning to school from an early dismissal will sign in through the office. 

7. Sick students should not be dismissed from school by the classroom teacher. At no time should a teacher allow a student to call parents to pick them up. All health related dismissals should be handled by the school nurse. 

8. No early dismissals will be granted after 1:30 p.m.

Impact of Student Attendance:  

Students who are consistently tardy to school, consistently have early dismissals, or are absent, miss valuable instructional time that hinders their learning. Students get behind in class-work or miss important information when this occurs. PLEASE make it a point to have your child at school every day from 7:45-2:15 pm. An excess of 2 early dismissals will deny a student perfect attendance for the quarter. Students with more than 3 early dismissals for the year will not receive a perfect attendance award for the year.

Grading Policy/Weight of Grades/Assessments

*All grades can be viewed through Backpack. Please check periodically for updates on your child’s grades. 

Reading:

• At least 7 minor grades and 2 major grades per nine weeks  

Language Arts:

• At least 7 minor grades, 2 major grades per nine weeks

Social Studies

• At least 5 minor grades, 2 major grades per nine weeks

Grading Scale:

The standardized grade scale used throughout the district will apply.

A =      90 - 100

B =      80-89

C =      70-79

D =      60-69

F=    59 or below

Handwriting grade: M (meets standard) or P (progressing toward standard) 

Handwriting will be assessed throughout each grading period.

Homework Policy:

• Students are encouraged to read each night.

• Students should look over notes daily. Studying notes daily will allow students to keep up with the material and be more prepared for weekly quizzes and unit tests

• No work or project will be accepted in handwriting other than the students.  

• The parent’s role is to provide time, space, and encouragement for students to study their notes. Reviewing notes with your child will greatly enhance their learning. 

Projects:

• Projects will be assigned throughout the school year. Most of the time students will be given time in class to begin working on their projects.  Students will be expected to complete what is not finished in class at home and turn in the project on time for a grade. Most projects are assessed using a rubric. Some projects will be minor grades and some will be major grades. 

Missed Work and Make-up Policy: 

• Students will have 5 school days to complete missed or make-up work. 

Student Behavior

We follow the Gateway Essentials throughout the entire school. Student behavior is monitored through the clipboard system. Each child is first given a verbal warning to stop inappropriate behavior. If the misbehavior continues, the child will receive a letter on the behavior clipboard. For example, a “T” would be for talking, an “O” would be for being off task, etc. This behavior system helps students take responsibility for their actions and helps keep them accountable.

D = Disruption

1 Letter = Warning

2 Letters = Conference with Teacher

3 Letters = Silent Lunch

4 Letters = Note to Parents

5 Letters = Recess Detention

6 Letters = Referral/Conference with Principal 

Rewards:

• Decreased number of laps during recess

• Additional Chromebook time

• Friendly seating in the cafeteria

• Student chosen reward system

*Students who receive two or more referrals may not be able to attend the Chattanooga Field trip*

House Points: (See House information)

• 0 behavior marks = +3 house points

• 1 or 2 behavior marks = +2 house points

• 3, 4, or 5 behavior marks = 0 house points

• 6 behavior marks = -1 house points

• 7 or more behavior marks = -2 house points

In order for learning to take place, good behavior and cooperation of teachers, students, and parents is crucial. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Most behavior issues will be handled in the classroom. If a major incident occurs, I will notify you through an email, a phone call, or a letter home. I know that all students make mistakes, and I will work with each of them to make their school year a success. It takes a combined effort from the teacher, from the student, and from the parent to create a positive environment with high expectations so that maximum learning can take place daily.

Materials

Everyday, students will need…

• Chromebook

• 3 composition notebooks

• Pencil Pouch with pencils, something to color with, and a dry erase marker.

• Headphones
