Keys to 5th Grade Success

Parents can help children study more effectively at home. Some suggestions are:


  • establish a routine - by establishing a daily routine of reviewing material and completing homework it can make the year run smoothly - set a time each day with clear expectation
  • provide a place to study - by having a proper space it can limit distractions, keep students alert, receptive and their work will be more efficient even if it is the kitchen table, desk just make sure the child feels comfortable
  • be organized - have all necessary materials at hand can avoid interruptions and spend time wisely
  • cover it all - reviewing assignments can keep students up to date and prepared for classroom discussions - as you review incorporate movements if needed - it can help assist in retention by more than just reading
  • note- taking, listening and asking questions are skills we will practice - make sure your student understands how to do this with you too
  • find ways that work - question to engage you mind, recite to retain, refine to help you mentally organize the information and build a long term memory
  • plan the work - make a list of assignments, keep a calendar of tests, projects and outside activities so that they can keep track of everything and have it complete - as the student checks off accomplishments it can lend a sense of progress
  • dive right in - begin with the most difficult or involves the most work so that the student doesn't get overwhelmed
  • have a buddy - it can motivate students if the subject is more difficult
  • eat to learn - a healthy snack before or during studying can aid concentration and make it more fun
  • take the time - set a goal for time spent studying and make a schedule - with a short break after 30 minutes - for fifth grade homework will include 20 minutes of reading a book on the students Lexile or STAR level then about 30 minutes of content assignments
  • talk to the teacher - if you have concerns based on your child the teacher can help optimize techniques all of this is to benefit students
