A Message To Our Students and Families (March 24th Update)

From Mrs. Jennings, Interim Executive Director

Dear Great Oaks Community,

Governor John Carney on Sunday issued new modifications to his State of Emergency declaration, ordering Delawareans to stay at home whenever possible and closing all non-essential businesses in Delaware to help fight the spread of COVID-19. The orders go into effect at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. The building will be closed to visitors beginning on Tuesday, March 24. Last night, Governor Carney announced that schools will be closed to students until May 15.

Although school has been closed, your Great Oaks teachers and staff have been busy. Great Oaks’ staff is working hard to finalize plans for remote learning for all of our students andWe will continue to send information to you as we have it. This is a concerning time and we want to make sure that we are able to work with all of our families to meet the needs of our students.

This week we will be finalizing our Distance Learning Plan to ensure that all our students have access to remote learning opportunities. For now, continue with the learning activities that you have been provided. This work is provided for learning enrichment and I encourage your child to work through it. Additional learning activities have been posted on the website and hard copies are available for pick up curbside 8:30 am - 1 pm for the remainder of this week. The activities provided during this two-week closure (March 16-March 27) will not be graded.

Beginning on March 30, we will be utilizing Google Classroom as the primary platform for instruction. This requires every student to access Google Classroom daily. All students have been assigned a Great Oaks email address for this purpose. Click here to watch a video for instructions on how to log on to Google Classroom.

Attached to this update is a schedule for on-line tutorials to help students learn how to use Google Classroom for learning. It is important that every student feel comfortable using Google Classroom. The Distance Learning Plan that you will receive at the end of this week will include a guide on how to use Google Classroom for learning. Please continue to check the website for additional information and resources.

During this time, we feel it is important to help our children stay connected to the classroom and the school. Fellows, teachers, and support staff will continue to check-in with families to provide support as needed. These check-ins are for your child’s benefit as we transition into a new way of learning. Please make sure that we have current email and telephone contact information for you.

CEB will continue to serve breakfast and lunch meals curbside on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am - 1 pm. Breakfast and lunch meals are available for ANY child 18 and under. Meals will be provided for two or three days at a time. Children may come unaccompanied, but any adult picking up food must have their child present. CEB’s Family Resource Center will also continue to support families through the food pantry and social services assistance. Please call the Family Resource Center at 302-660-4753 to schedule an appointment.

Now that we know our return-to-school date, we will be discussing possible changes to our school calendar as well as extracurricular and end of year activities..

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve daily. The need for a Stay-At- Home order was essential to keep everyone separated and safe during this time. As information is constantly changing we will continue to provide it to you as soon as possible. As always, I am personally grateful for your partnership in the education of your children in these difficult times. Stay well and continue to follow the recommendations of the Division of Public Health.

This can be an uncertain time for us as adults, but very much for our children. The CDC has issued new guidance for Children and Coronavirus that is helpful. While there is more in the guidance on the site, this piece could be most helpful for you during this time of remote learning:

Stay in touch with your child’s teacher.

  • Review assignments from your child’s teachers and help your child establish a reasonable pace for completing the work.

  • Communicate challenges to us! If you face technology or connectivity issues, or if your child is having a hard time completing assignments, please let us know.

Create a schedule and routine for learning at home, but remain flexible.

  • Have consistent bedtimes and get up at the same time, Monday through Friday.

  • Structure the day for learning, free time, healthy meals and snacks, and physical activity.

  • Allow flexibility in the schedule—it’s okay to adapt based on your day.

Look for ways to make learning fun.

  • Have hands-on activities, like puzzles, painting, drawing, and making things.

  • Independent play can also be used in place of structured learning. Encourage children to build a fort from sheets or practice counting by stacking blocks.

  • Start a journal with your child to document this time and discuss the shared experience.

A Message To Our Students And Families (March 16th Update)

Dear Great Oaks Families,

I understand that we all have many questions around what this closure means for school, instruction, and other services. I will continue to reach out with updates as I have them to help you know what to expect.

What to expect during these two weeks:

  • If you or your child needs to pick something up from school, you may do so between 8 am and 1 pm on Monday and Wednesday.

  • The nurse’s office will also be open from 8 am - 1 pm on Monday and Wednesday. In addition, Nurse Coleman will be available daily by email from 8 am - 3 pm if you have questions for her.

  • CEB will be providing a "to-go" breakfast and lunch daily on weekdays to any child 18 and under. Breakfast and lunch may be picked up at the same time. It may be picked up in the CEB lobby from 8:30 am - 1 pm. Children may come on their own or be accompanied by an adult. An adult, however, may not pick up meals without the child present.

  • CEB's Food Pantry and Family Resource Center will be open on weekdays from 7:30 am - 6 pm.

  • The instructional teams will be sharing activities and resources to help families support their child’s continued learning while at home. Materials for Monday and Tuesday will be available on Monday. These activities are available on the school closure website that you are currently viewing. If you do not have access to the internet, you may pick up a hard copy of the learning activities and resources at the CEB from 8:30 am - 1 pm.

  • If your child has an IEP, you can expect additional communication and support from their case manager.

  • We will be conducting a survey regarding access to technology to support online learning.

  • Great Oaks’ Fellows will also be calling daily to check-in, provide your child with academic support and, if necessary, to connect you with other resources that may be helpful to you during this time.

Should we need to extend the closure beyond the two weeks, we will review and adapt the curriculum to an on-line environment, provide additional resources for practice at home, and find ways to support families who do not have access to technology. Information about special education and related services will also be provided. A few people have asked about whether we will make up these days and, if so, how. No decision has been made with regard to these questions. We will begin these discussions once we know more about whether this 2 week closure is likely to be extended.

Please let us know what you need so that we can help find answers and solutions. There are many people willing to support and help, so please let us know what you need. Feel free to reach out to me at
