Students from every grade showed up in the gym for the exciting math carnival that was held by MoMath Museum on September 18-22. At the fair, there were fun ways to get the kids to connect with math on a different level.
“I love this. I've been doing this since I was a young man and I still enjoy it,” museum worker Chaim Goodman-Strauss says. He has been involved with the math museum since before they opened, and he officially started to work there full time in January. Both he and Proctor High School’s math teacher Mrs. Ryan are hoping that the kids find excitement through the engagement of the activities in the gym.
“I thought it was a perfect fit for changing the mindsets of the kids,” Mrs. Ryan said.
She mentioned her favorite games to get kids excited in her own classroom. One of these games is the famous “Trashketball.” This is when students answer math questions and if their answer is correct they get to shoot the basketball into the trashcan for points.
Some of the younger students at Proctor Elementary School stated that they would “do this again.” They mentioned some of their favorite activities at the fair. The number one hit for most grades was the “Funny Face Camera”, which is a screen where you input math problems to select the filter that goes over your face. The next biggest hit was the “Shape Laser”, where students put clear shapes in front of the lazer in order to see their 2D insides.
There was even a math night for the community on Wednesday so they could come and play with math. The senior class sold goodies, such as cotton candy, hot dogs, and drinks; raising $75 for their class.
