Castleton football player Mark Howland spent most of the second semester at PrHS learning how to be a PE teacher.
Prior to his time at PrHS, Mr. Howland spent three years at Vermont State University Castleton Campus working on getting his bachelor's degree in Physical Education.
“He is very enthusiastic about everything he does,” mentor and P.E. Teacher Mrs. Esslinger said.
Howland has loved P.E. from a very young age, which he credits to the help of great teachers.
Here at Proctor, he has enjoyed his student teaching experience. “I love it, it’s a great school. It’s definitely smaller than what I’m used to. The faculty are amazing and the kids are great,” said Mr. Howland.
“Sports games are my favorite,” he said in regards to teaching. This stems from his love for football and his free time activities which include playing lacrosse and basketball.
Mrs. Esslinger observed that he got along great with everyone and has a wonderful personality. She is fond of the memories they shared while he was here: “going to Vermont Sport and Fitness on our field trip, talking about the day with him after the school day was over, and watching him create meaningful memories with kids.”
She felt that not only did she teach him, but he taught her some things as well. “ He showed me that I need to be the core source of energy and enthusiasm in each class.”
After graduation this month, Howland plans to further his education and get his master's degree and either become a physical education teacher or an athletic director in Vermont.
Outside of school and work, you can find Howland fishing and hunting, hanging out with friends, going on hikes, and spending time with his dog in nature.
