What do you listen to after school? Chances are, you might have similar music interests with some of your classmates.
There are many music genres, including sub-genres but a couple are favored throughout our school, as well as a few that people do not like.
“Country makes me cringe, the rhythm and the tune makes me wanna cry," Tenth grader Madison Doperak emphasized.
“I like classic rock just because I grew up with it,” Tenth grader Phoebe Cornwell said about her interest in the more popular genre.
Rock was the most popular genre. However, some students have other favorite genres.
“My favorite genre is instrumental because there can be many different types, it can help you pump up or calm you down,” said Freshman Cassie Baker.
“I really like showtunes because you go from a song that's super happy to a song that has you crying on the floor,” Sophomore Anna Weideman said.” I’ve been doing theater since I was seven so my music taste came naturally.”
“My favorite is R&B, I like the soulfulness and versatility of it,” Junior Jayda Perry explained.
Overall it seems that students seem to enjoy music that ranges in emotions more than music that expresses one set emotion. According to the Wall Street Journal, country music has had a significant increase in popularity over the years having its biggest increase in 30 years, however, it's not as popular here.
Everyone has an origin story on how they discovered the music they listen to today, the most common being through friends and family.
“My father introduced me really early on to different rappers and hip hop,” Sophomore Dominic Walsh said,
“During Covid, I didn't have anything to do. I found my music because we didn't have an Amazon music premium so different songs would just pop up,” Phoebe said.
Of course everyone has a favorite musician that they jam out to, some artists brought up were: Lin Manuel Miranda, Randall D. Standridge, Jeff Buckley, NBA Youngboy, Shinedown, Beyoncé, and Panic at the Disco!
So if you need a music recommendation when nothing sounds right, try asking one of your classmates, you could be discovering your new favorite type of music.
