The Journalism/ Yearbook students are creating possible yearbook cover designs capturing the theme: Where the Wind Blows. While most students are using Canva or other graphic design programs, Ash Lees decided that they wanted to draw the cover of the yearbook.
“I chose the paper airplane because the paper airplane represents the school in a way to show learning and creativity. I also incorporated the leaves, snowflakes, and flowers to represent the changing seasons in Vermont,” Ash states.
Ash is interested in art because of how it makes them feel. “I feel calm and collected with myself because when I'm by myself and stressed, it helps me calm down.”
“ I started when I was 6, so basically my whole life,” Ash explains about creating art. Their interest in art is inherited. “My dad would always draw and color. I would like to continue in my father’s footsteps.”
While there are many forms of art, Ash enjoys drawing and painting and using a variety of tools, “Paints, markers, pencils, sometimes watercolors. I want to use oil pastels because I hear they are really good for realistic drawing,”
Ash draws a different variety of subjects. “Anything that comes to their mind,” they say. They say they have a hard time explaining their feelings to people and they can express them better through art. “I start with how I feel and then I would go for what it would look like in my mind because I can't really explain what it looks like in my mind…if I draw, I feel people would understand better.”
Ash says they don't have a preference on what they draw. A lot of it depends on their mood.
” When I'm more sad or depressed, I tend to draw darker things. When I'm happy, I tend to draw random things like flowers, and clowns.”
In the future, Ash would like to open up a store that deals with arts and crafts. However, they think it will be difficult for them because it's a lot of work. “It's going to cost a lot of money,” Ash states, adding “ I would need a partner with me because it's going to be difficult to open my own business by myself and it will put a lot of pressure on me.”
No matter what the future holds, it is very clear that Ash will continue to create art following in their father’s footsteps.
