"Children learn to succeed by discovering that getting something wrong is often the first step towards getting it right.”
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is curiosity, perseverance and the confidence to keep going when something feels difficult. At home, simple activities such as puzzles, board games, reading, drawing, building, cooking or completing practical challenges together can develop concentration and problem-solving skills in ways that passive screen time cannot.
We have noticed that some of our older pupils can become frustrated when faced with a tricky maths problem or challenging piece of work and may want to give up quickly. Our message at Grafton is simple: it is okay to get things wrong. What matters is that we learn, try again and keep going. We would really value your support in reinforcing this message at home.
The same principle applies to behaviour. Children will make mistakes as they grow. They may fall out with a friend, say something unkind, hit another child or make a poor choice about following our school rules. Our role is not simply to punish the mistake, but to help children understand what happened, take responsibility, repair relationships and make a better choice next time. This restorative approach is an important part of our Behaviour Policy and helps children develop responsibility, empathy and self-regulation.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our SEND workshops this week. Working together makes such a difference to our children, and we look forward to welcoming even more families to our workshops, events and activities throughout the year.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership.

Our Story, Our Faces
We were lucky enough to be featured in the LBBD newsletter this month. Our Year 6 children took part in an art event in association with Valence House Museum.
The final countdown has begun!
We are thrilled to announce that the Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Councillor Manzoor Hussain, will be joined by local author Natalie Newman to officially open our new school library on Wednesday 7th October.
We are incredibly excited to finally reveal this wonderful new reading space to our school community. We can’t wait for our children to explore the library, discover new books and enjoy everything it has to offer.
As part of the opening celebrations, our children will have the opportunity to visit the library throughout the day. Our younger children will also enjoy a special workshop with Natalie Newman, who will be reading her book Lark the Shark and answering their questions.
Look out for more information about our grand opening and details of how you and your child can make the most of our new library.
Happy reading! 📖✨
Black History Month 2026 - Honouring our Communities
The theme for this year's Black History Month (October) is Honouring Our Communities.
The theme invites us to recognise and celebrate the people who contribute to the strength, success and wellbeing of our communities every day.
We would like to invite members of our local community to share their stories, experiences, knowledge and perspectives with pupils in Year 3 and Year 4. Children will be able to learn from diverse voices and make meaningful connections between Black history, their local area and the people around them.
We'd love to hear from you if you are willing to visit one of our classes and talk to the children about your experiences.
Please complete the attached form. We will then contact you to arrange your visit. Black History Month Visit to Grafton
We appreciate your support in celebrating Black History Month.
