Spring Term 2 2026
Grafton Primary School
Grafton Primary School
Spring Term is a time for renewal and growth and at Grafton Primary we have seen this shine in our pupils- from nursery where they have truly settled and have begun writing in sentences , all the way to Year 6 who are preparing for their SATS and embedding the skills that they have learnt. Well done to the whole of Grafton Primary- for trying your best!
It is so important in our community that we understand the impact of screen time on young people and again research has indicated that children under the age of 2 should have no access or very limited- bonding, interaction and conversation are more important. Children 2-5 years should have under 1 hour. Please support us and your child by limiting access.
“The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear, resentment or love. What seeds will you plant there?” — Jack Kornfield
Happy Easter! Enjoy the time with family and friends. 🌷🐣
Spring 2 started with our wonderful Lunar New Year celebrations. We had the chance to make lanterns, dance with ribbons and even write our own wishes. We also looked at how people around the world celebrate the New Year and why this year is the 'Year of the Horse.'
We planted our own beans after reading Jack and the Beanstalk and watched them grow. Some of them have grown very well. The children will be taking them home and hopefully, they can continue to grow at home. Who knows...maybe one of them will be a magic beanstalk!
World Book Day was great fun and all of the brilliant costumes made the classroom very colourful. We had princesses, bees, Harry Potters and even a 'Gangsta Grannie!' Throughout the day, we heard lots of stories from different people, including Mr Farquhar's favourite!
As part of our work on The Giant Turnip, we went into the Nursery garden and found a turnip! We had the chance to cut, peel and chop different vegetables. We also wrote ingredients for our own vegetable soup and then made our own class soup.
For Science Week, we created our own animals and had a fun yoga session where we pretended to be sea creatures. We have also learned about how flowers grow and how important bees are to the world.
Spring 2 term has been an amazing half term and we are very much looking forward to Summer 1 term.
This term, the children have been reading Look Up! by Nathan Bryon. When Badger Class arrived at school, they were excited to find a telescope in the classroom, which sparked lots of curiosity about space. The children learned about the astronaut Mae Jemison and discovered interesting facts about space, including meteor showers. They used this information to create their own awesome space fact files!
It has been lovely to see the children so enthusiastic about their learning!
In Maths, the children have been learning about numbers to 50. They have been practising counting in 2s and 10s and learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones.
We have also had an exciting term, celebrating lots of different things. Badger Class parents joined us for Books for Breakfast, and it was wonderful to see so many parents sharing a book with their child.
The children also celebrated World Book Day and came dressed as their favourite book character. The outfits were amazing and the children were very excited to show their costumes. Badger Class also shared books with Year 2 and enjoyed listening to them read.
In DT, our Year 1 children have been exploring the exciting world of pulleys! They worked in groups to understand how axles help wheels move smoothly, then designed and created their very own pulley toy cars. The results were fantastic—so imaginative and creative! It was wonderful to see the children experimenting, problem-solving, and bringing their ideas to life.
To celebrate British Science Week, the children in Badger Class made their own wormery! We learned all about worms and how they help plants and flowers grow by keeping the soil healthy. The children carefully layered soil and sand to create the wormery and helped place the worms into their new home. It was a fantastic hands-on activity and the children were very excited to watch how the worms moved through the layers over time.
This term, we have also been learning about how to keep our bodies healthy. The children explored different ways to stay healthy, including eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. We talked about how these habits help our bodies grow strong and keep our minds feeling good.
What a busy and wonderful term it has been in Badger Class!
This term in Severn Class, we’ve been busy exploring many exciting new topics, and we’re delighted to share some of our highlights with you.
British Transport Police Visit
Year 2 had a very exciting visit from the British Transport Police this half term. The officers spoke to the children about how to stay safe when travelling on different types of transport, such as trains and buses. They also taught the children what to do and who to ask for help if they ever feel worried or need assistance while travelling. The children asked lots of thoughtful questions and really enjoyed learning about the important role the police play in keeping people safe. One of the highlights of the visit was getting the opportunity to sit inside the police van and hear the siren, which everyone thought was very exciting! We would like to say a big thank you to the British Transport Police for visiting us and teaching the children such important safety information.
Mathematics
In Maths this half term, we have been learning about multiplication and division. We have practised multiplying by 2 and dividing by 2, and explored this by sharing objects into equal groups to help us understand how these calculations work.
World Book Day
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! The children came to school dressed up as their favourite book characters and enjoyed sharing their costumes with their friends. Throughout the day, we also had fun reading in places we wouldn’t normally read, which made our stories even more exciting. To celebrate our love of books, we created a paper chain of our favourite stories, with each child adding a book they enjoy. It was a wonderful day full of reading, imagination and a celebration of books!
Literacy
In Literacy, we’ve been enjoying The Dragon Machine. We explored the story and offered George our own clever ideas for helping the mischievous dragons. The children also embarked on an exciting dragon hunt around the school, which they loved—though we made sure to report all dragon sightings to the caretaker!
Science
In Science, we have been exploring the world of plants. We conducted experiments to see how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy. The children investigated different types of plants and ways of growing them to discover which grows best in which environment. We even dissected daffodils to examine and separate the different parts of the plant — it was lots of fun!
Geography
This half term, Year 2 are becoming map explorers! Our big question is: Can we find our local area on different maps? We started by finding Dagenham on a map and learning how maps help us locate places. We then looked for Grafton School and discussed landmarks that help people find their way. The children also became map makers, drawing their own maps of the classroom and learning how to use coordinates on maps. In Art, pupils will design their own map of London and even create a 3D relief map using different materials. Year 2 are doing a fantastic job developing their geography skills!
Design and Technology
In Design and Technology this half term, Year 2 have been busy building their own Ferris wheels. The children learned how to design and make a structure that can move by creating an axle so the wheel can turn. They carefully built their models and tested them to make sure the wheel moved smoothly. It has been exciting to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action!
Religious Education
As part of our RE learning, we visited a church to find out more about Easter. During our visit, we took part in a fun race to find puzzle pieces, created self-portraits that will be displayed in the church, and learned about what would have been on the table during the Last Supper. We have worked very hard this term and have many reasons to celebrate. We enjoy learning together and trying new things every day.
We look forward to sharing more of our exciting work with you soon!
What a busy and exciting half term it has been in Morpurgo Class!
Literacy
In Literacy, we explored Malala’s Magic Pencil. We learned about Malala’s life, thoughts, and hopes, and the children created their own diary entries as Malala. They showed fantastic ideas and empathy while developing their reading and writing skills!
Maths
Our learning has focused on multiplication and division. The children have been confidently using their 3, 4, and 8 times tables to solve problems, and we have introduced the expanded written method. Everyone has shown great determination and growing confidence with these new skills.
World Book Day
This term, we celebrated World Book Day! Children came to school dressed as their favourite book characters, recreated the covers of books of their choice in class, and participated in reading for enjoyment. It was wonderful to see everyone so engaged and excited about stories.
Science
We have been learning about different types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The children explored patterns, shapes, and textures, learning to describe what rocks look and feel like (smooth, rough, hard) and explaining how they are formed. The hands-on activities really helped bring the science to life!
Design and Technology
Year 3 have been making their Egyptian collars. They have been learning running stitches and cross stitches to sew various shapes and patterns. Each child created their own paper template and is now bringing it to life in fabric. Each collar is unique and represents the child’s personality.
It has been a wonderful half term filled with learning and creativity. We can’t wait to see what exciting adventures the next term brings!
This term, 4 Simmonds Class visited Valance Library. We learned how to check out a library book and had the opportunity to search for one by genre and theme. We also visited West Stow Anglo Saxon Village as part of our History and Geography topic: The Anglo Saxons. The children had the opportunity to examine different types of artefacts and describe the purpose of each one to each other. We also had the opportunity to explore different types of houses that could be found in an Anglo-Saxon village. Many of us were fascinated to learn that everything on display at the village was made from real life materials – including the animal fur used as rugs!
Our class also visited St Mary’s Church recently to learn about the Easter story and why it is an important time for Christians. We engaged in different activities with the Parish priest and other members of staff. We got to make our own book marks, learn about different religious artifacts and locate different clues related to the story of Jesus. In DT, we designed our own biscuits and chose our own ingredients. We then created them by following a recipe and worked together to create our own biscuits. All of us added our own toppings before they went into the oven. They tasted really good when they came out of the oven!
It has been a fantastic and very busy half term.
In our writing lessons, we have been reading 'The Promise' by Nicola Davies. The children have worked hard to develop their creative writing skills through writing flashback narratives based on key moments in the story. They have produced some wonderful ideas for their character's backstory and emotional memories, showing imagination, empathy and growing confidence as writers. These pieces will be available to read during parents' evening and we are sure you will be as impressed as we are with their thoughtful work.
In maths, we have been focusing on decimals, fractions and percentages. The children have been developing their understanding of how these are linked as well as learning to convert between them and apply their knowledge to real life problem solving. They have shown great perseverance and are becoming much more confident when tackling more challenging reasoning questions.
In Geography, we have been learning all about Brazil. The children explored and compared Brazilian culture, climate, biomes and lifestyle with the UK. We linked our knowledge from our Geography lessons to our DT lessons, where the children designed and made delicious Brazilian pastels. They spent time learning important food preparation skills such as chopping, grating, rolling and folding. The results were fantastic and the classroom smelled amazing. The children also learnt about the importance of packaging on food products, nutritional value and what the different colours mean.
During our outdoor PE lessons, the children have been developing their cricket skills focusing on throwing, catching and batting. They have shown great teamwork, coordination and enthusiasm throughout each session.
During science week, we revisited our learning from the autumn term on life cycles, deepening our understanding of how living things grow and change. Our caterpillars finally joined us as the warmer weather arrived giving the children the exciting opportunity to observe a real life life cycle in action. They have watched them closely each day, showing great care and curiosity as they grow and change and we are hopeful we will soon see them transform into butterflies.
We were also fortunate to take part in a special assembly led by the Breck Foundation focusing on online safety. The children learned important messages about staying safe online and making positive choices when using games and the internet. This is a great opportunity to continue the conversation at home. Please ask your child about the games they play online, take time to play with them and enjoy their interests while helping them stay safe.
Communication and Language at Grafton
Here’s an update on some of the developments across communication and language at Grafton. As well as developing writing in our Literacy lessons, we’ve been increasing the opportunities that the children have to write in other subjects across the curriculum. This helps them to apply the skills they learn in their Literacy lessons and also to better understand the role that writing plays within a range of careers - as a biologist (Science), a museum curator (History) or a travel advisor (Geography). Here are just a few examples of our writing across the curriculum.
Children in Year 3 to Year 6 have the opportunity to further develop their communication skills by learning Spanish. This year, we introduced a new language programme, Language Angels. Through this online platform, children learn the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In Year 3, children start by learning the sounds and the names of fruits and animals. This then progresses through to Year 6 where children are able to have conversations about healthy lifestyles and the activities they do at the weekend. If you want to ask your child how they are in Spanish, it’s Cómo estás
Finally, if you’ve been in our KS2 playground recently you’ll have seen the building of our new library. Last week our Reading Ambassadors visited the new library at Beacontree School. We heard how their Reading Champions had decided on their library design and how they run their library. The visit gave our ambassadors lots of ideas which they’ll be sharing in the Summer term.
SEND
The SEND children in the school thoroughly enjoyed attending a recent bowling competition, where they had the opportunity to compete against other schools from across the borough. The event was a fantastic experience, allowing the children to build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and have fun in a supportive and inclusive environment. Each participant showed great enthusiasm and determination throughout the day, and they were all proud to receive a medal in recognition of their efforts and participation.
In addition, the children in the intervention rooms greatly enjoyed participating in World Book Day, embracing the opportunity to explore stories, share their favourite book characters, and take part in engaging, creative activities.
The children in the ARK really enjoyed their trip to Barleylands. They loved the journey, seeing the animals and getting to feed the baby lambs. They also enjoyed a tractor ride around the farm and exploring some fun indoor and outdoor play spaces. A very special thanks to Dan and Zoe, who used a volunteer day from their company, VolkerWessels UK Ltd, to provide and drive us there in their minibuses. Without their kindness and generosity, this trip would not have been possible and we are so grateful for their huge part in making this experience possible for our children.
We are delighted to share some of the fantastic work created recently in our Arts & Crafts Club – our talented children have been busy designing and making some truly amazing cakes!
From the very beginning, the children took full creative control of their projects. They carefully planned their ideas, sketched designs, and selected colours and themes before bringing their creations to life. The level of detail, imagination, and skill involved has been incredible to see.
Throughout the process, the children developed a wide range of skills including:
Creative design and planning
Fine motor skills and careful craftsmanship
Patience and problem-solving
Confidence in expressing their own ideas
Each cake is a unique reflection of the child’s creativity, and we are so proud of their hard work and enthusiasm.
We are pleased to let you know that there are still places available in our Arts & Crafts Club for next term. If your child would like to join and be part of more exciting, hands-on creative projects, we would love to welcome them.
Parents and carers can book a place for the next half term via the Arbor app.
We look forward to another term full of creativity and fun!
