John Long Middle School Counseling Program Definition:

School Counseling is an integral part of John Long Middle School's educational program. It is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by a Wisconsin licensed professional school counselor with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents. The school counselor is uniquely qualified to address the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. The school counselor's primary goal is to help students become life-long learners by building self-esteem and self-understanding, assisting in the development of goal-setting and decision-making skills, seeing them through crisis situations and providing appropriate counseling opportunities for those who want and need it. Our school counseling program delivers services in four areas:

School Counseling Curriculum (Classroom Guidance)

Individual Planning/Academic and Career Planning (ACP)

Responsive Services (Individual/Small Group Counseling)

System Support

The Program addresses the needs of ALL students by helping them to:

  • Achieve educational success
  • Develop competencies in career/life planning
  • Acquire and apply personal and social knowledge

The Role of the School Counselor:
