Signed Big Read Forms are due one week before the competition date. This lets us know who will be competing and allows time to form teams.

  • The Big Read is a reading quiz competition that happens in the spring.

  • The Big Read is a team competition where teams answer questions about specific books. Each grade level has a list of assigned books. Students must read all books on the list in order to compete.

  • The reading may be done independently, with parents or older siblings, or by listening to an unabridged audiobook. The intent of The Big Read program is to encourage families to read together and to enjoy reading books with your friends.

  • First Graders will have all of the books read in library and/or class. Everyone in 1st grade will compete in a classroom competition a week before the final competition. The top teams from both classes will compete on April 6.

  • Notes of things to remember can be written down while reading can be used to review later for the competition. Things to include are: author, main characters, problems that occur, unusual settings and themes. Click on the printable Big Read Note Page to print out a worksheet that can help organize notes.

  • Before the competition is held a signed Big Read form must be signed by a parent/guardian stating that all of the books have been read. Need a form to sign? Click on the Printable List of Books above to print out a form.

  • Our school library has several copies of all of the books on the list.

  • Each classroom teacher will decide how the teams will be selected; students will form teams from within their own classroom. If there are more than 4 teams per grade, there will be a competition in class first; the highest scoring teams from both classes will move on to the final competition that is held in the chapel. Teams moving on to the final competition may dress in costumes if they desire.

I hope to see you all compete and have fun participating in The Big Read!
