Important Notes and Reminders

• Family Photo: Thank you to those of you who have already sent me your family photo. I've enjoyed seeing all the smiles and cool places you've been. If you haven't done so already, email me a family photo that will be displayed on the cabinets in our classroom.

• Snack: Kids are allowed to bring a snack each day. My only requirement is for it to be a healthy snack (no candy, please!)

Writing:

-Our first spelling test will be on Friday, Aug. 18. We are on the Module 1 Week 1 list.

*Please note: We will be focusing on spelling rules and patterns, rather than rote memorization of correct spelling. Instead of testing students over ALL the words listed each week, we will be giving a Check for Understanding with just 10 words from the spelling list each week. Students will be given a copy of a word list to cut up and keep at school in a Ziplock bag. Spelling words will also be written in their planner each week as well for practice at home. Please also check out the spelling page under the class information tab for more information about spelling lists. It has two links; one of which has all of our spelling lists for the whole school year.

-Grammar: Complete Sentences, Subjects, Predicates 

Math:

-Topic 1: Understand Place Value (Lessons 1-5)

-Our first math test is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 25.

Science:

-Unit 4: Earth and Space Patterns

-Module 1: Earth's patterns and movements

Social Studies:

-mapping skills; hemispheres, latitude & longitude, continents & oceans

-mapping quiz next Monday, Aug. 21 (study guide will be given on Monday)

Reading:

-Module 1: Inventors at Work

-Story: The Inventor's Secret

-Skills: author's purpose, point of view, and central idea

-reading quiz on Friday
