Welcome to Austin ESA monthly newsletter. Families, because of district safety guidelines, you are not able to visit us in the building. We miss seeing you in our building, and want to make sure you are connected with what is going on here at Austin. The newsletter this month has great information and ways you can be involved in your student's learning. Please read all the way through.

December Focus
Math- Students will be working on solving problems, focusing on sorting objects that are the same and different into groups and describing how the groups are similar and different.
ELA- Students will work to demonstrate understanding of print directionality including left to right and top to bottom.
Science- Students will be exploring the importance of caring for our environment and our planet.

Math- Student will be working on modeling, representing, and explaining strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems involving sums and minuends to 10.
ELA- Students will work to understand Literary Elements in Fiction, Including Drama. They will explore genre characteristics, structure, and purpose of fictional text, including drama.
Science- Students will be exploring weather. The focus will be on recognizable patterns in weather changes and objects in the sky related to weather.

Math- Students focus on number relationships and patterns in numbers including the sum of a multiple of 10 and a one-digit number, reciting numbers, skip counting, and numbers that are 10 more and 10 less than a given number.
ELA- Students will be working understanding what they read and write: focusing on strategies with an emphasis on evaluating details to determine their importance and on synthesizing ideas and details within and across texts.
Science- Students will continue to explore natural resources found in our world, their physical properties, and how they are useful.

Math- Students will begin constructing, describing, and naming fractional parts of a whole using models.
ELA- Students will be focusing on examining characteristics of Fiction, including structure, and purpose of fictional text, including drama.
Science- Students will continue to explore natural and manmade resources and their physical properties.

Science- Students will continue to explore usefulness and conservation of natural resources, soil formation, and changes in the surface of the Earth.

Environmental Science
In December we will be focusing on recycling and composting. What items we can recycle to be made into new products or how we can make items we use last longer by repurposing them.
Parents, you can help with by recycling at home and talking to your students about what items they can put in the recycling bins that go on the curb. Also, by finding items in your house that you can reuse instead of throwing them away.

Notes From The Art Room
We are winding down 2020. This has been a very hard year for many of us, but I have seen some wonderful things happen. As a teacher I have been growing and exploring new ways to reach my students. There was certainly never a dull moment.
I treasure the time I have spent with my own children during virtual learning. It was a gift, but I still have to remember to take care of myself as well. Please remember that you matter too. The holidays can be stressful for us, and this year might add to them. Before it gets to be too much, slow things down a bit. Art can be a wonder tool to help.
Whenever you see your child working on their artwork, feel free to join in. You don’t have to be perfect at something to enjoy doing it. Put on some of your favorite music. Sit down with your child, and do some art. Just have a little fun.
Music
Parents - would you like a live, personalized performance from your scholar? This month Austin music is focusing on exploring winter and songs from various cultures with December holidays such as Christmas, Chanukkah and Kwanzaa. Student will be practicing performance and audience etiquette with a private performance just for you. How can I help my child? Como puedo ayudar a mi hijo?
Math- Have your student log into Imagine Math for 30 minutes a day. Practice math facts with your student daily.
ELA- Read for 20 minutes with you student daily and ask comprehension questions at the end.
Science- Review science vocabulary words with your student.
