KRHS PHYSICAL EDUCATION
PROMOTING HEALTH AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN
FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
This course is designed to encourage students to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in daily physical activity. Students will learn concepts related to developing and maintaining personal fitness for a lifetime. With instruction, practice opportunities in activity settings, record keeping, and pre- and post assessments, students will become equipped to design effective personal fitness programs for an active lifestyle. Emphasis will be on health-related components of fitness as well as implementation of training principles. The program will incorporate a wellness approach, highlighting the connection between physical activity and self-esteem, stress management, and social skills including conflict resolution and teamwork. Additional topics covered include benefits of exercise, health risk factors, safety and injury prevention, nutrition, and muscle identification. Students will practice proper dynamic, static stretching, resistance training, and heart monitoring techniques. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of individual and group activities, games, and sports.
TEAM SPORTS PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
This course is designed to increase skill and health components of fitness through
active participation in team sports. Students are expected to participate in skills and drills in each
particular sport to increase skill acquisition.
INDIVIDUAL SPORTS PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
This course will incorporate acquisition of health and skill components of fitness primarily through active participation in individual sports and activities. Based on overall personal fitness goals, students will supplement their programs with individual cardio, resistance training workouts, and other fitness activities. Students will demonstrate an understanding of changing fitness goals as the body ages. Each student will recommend to the class a new individual activity and analyze each health/skill component potentially acquired.
PERSONAL WEIGHT TRAINING AND CONDITIONING PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
This course is designed to meet the individual needs based on students’ personal fitness goals. These goals may range from sport specific skill performances (agility, speed, coordination, etc.) or more generalized health-related goals (cardiovascular, muscular strength, flexibility, etc.). Current level of fitness will be assessed and an individualized exercise program will be planned and implemented. Nutrition will be emphasized and documented.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND GAMES PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
This course is designed to improve personal fitness through active
participation in seasonal outdoor activities. Team building, trust activities, problem solving, and
challenge by choice activities are performed through experiential learning. Outdoor games such as
walking, hiking, orienteering, capture the flag, frisbee golf, and cooperative games are played.
