Workshop B 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
The Great Gatsby, the American Civil War, The Catcher in the Rye––these are all subjects rooted at the core of American secondary education. In the great tides of cultural and historical significance these topics carry, one voice is often drowned out. International students often arrive in the States without the knowledge that domestic students have spent their entire lives growing up, resulting in confusion and an unfair disadvantage that often goes underdetected. Some schools, while offering international orientation or a host family system to accommodate for culture shock, do not have enough awareness or preparation to fully support an internationally diverse community.
In this discussion-based workshop, we plan to dissect the problem and expand on some viable solutions. We hope to decentralize the America-centric education system to construct a learning environment that furthers cultural awareness for all students involved, domestic or otherwise.
