Easy Makerspace Ideas To Do From Home

Lego Challenges

Challenge #1

Build a Boat that floats! Then challenge yourself! How many bricks, coins, beads, Cheerios etc. (whatever you have around the house) can it hold before it sinks!? Can you make the boat stronger to hold more? What happens when you make it bigger, or smaller? Have fun with this! And share any images or videos you make testing your boat with me! l.mcinnis@tvdsb.ca - or share it with me on your Google Drive! Just look for Liisa McInnis!

Challenge #2

Build a Maze! Create a challenge for someone to solve! Can you get a marble, a grape/blueberry, a bead, or small ball of playdoh/clay through a series of twists and turns? What can you adjust to make it more challenging? What can you adjust to make it more simple? Share your maze with me on your Google Drive! I would love to see it!

Challenge #3

Create Symmetry! Create anything you like! Simply pretend there is an invisible line running down the center, and make sure that both sides are mirror images of each other! The idea of symmetry - is that if you were to fold the object in half - it would look exactly the same on both sides :) Have fun and share your images with me!

Challenge #4

Create a Pyramid! Start with a wide, square base and gradually add smaller layers until you create a pyramid! How big can you get your pyramid!? How few layers do you need to create the shape? How big CAN you make it?! Please share your findings with me and I can add your pictures to the site!

Challenge #5

Create spinning tops! Make more than one! Which one spins faster, or longer, and why do you think that? Have "spinner matches" to see two spinners battle it out on the kitchen table! Which one will knock the other out!? https://frugalfun4boys.com/spinning-tops-lego-building-idea/ Remember - send your pictures of things you're trying at home to Mrs. McInnis at l.mcinnis@tvdsb.ca and I will add your picture to the site!

Challenge #6

Monochromatic Lego Sculpture! Check out this awesome video about an artist named Ekow Nimako! He builds Lego sculptures out of the same colour Lego! Challenge yourself to watch the video, and see what kind of art piece you can create!
