Known as the ‘King of Ragtime’, Scott Joplin was one of the most important and influential composers at the turn of the 20th century. His "Maple Leaf Rag" became the first piece of instrumental music to sell a million copies in the United States.
His ideas around harmony, as well as his complex bass patterns and sporadic syncopation, are still imitated by composers today.
After Joplin’s death, ragtime faded from prominence, but instead evolved into other styles, such as jazz, big band swing and eventually rock `n roll.
