“Art lives from constraints and dies from freedom.” (Leonardo da Vinci)
Philosophy:
The capacity for divergent thinking is the foundation of our program. We nourish this through engaging our students in creative work that includes drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture, ceramics, and Industrial Design. Through these pursuits, and a survey of artists/designers through history we hope that each student discovers a love of visual art and the language to express their own understanding/awareness of the MEANING of art making.
Transferable skills:
“Through the arts, students learn to observe, visualize, manipulate materials, and develop the creative confidence to imagine new possibilities.” The Art of Thinking Like a Scientist, Lisa Yokana, 2014
The creative mindset being at the core of higher order thinking, and the skillset necessary for success in the conceptual age, we believe that a study of the visual arts underpins the foundation for deep understanding and innovation.
