Dear GPA Families,
I am so very excited to welcome you and your child to 7th and 8th Grade Science at Gompers Preparatory Academy (GPA). My name is Jackie Glaser and I'm a new addition to GPA and I am so excited to join the community of learners here. This year will be my very first year teaching and I feel so honored to take on this journey with you! I expected my first year to be full of lessons and new experiences, but I couldn't have predicted that the year would hold these lessons and new experiences for ALL of us. I hope you will join me in modeling grace, kindness, and empathy to ourselves as we work to support our students during these times. Distance learning could never compare to the collaboration and connection available in a classroom, but it is my number one goal to support students in their journey through learning during a pandemic and to tap into the same curiosity and excitement that drive a traditional science classroom. I want to work together with you as a team to create the best experience for our students and children and to be as flexible and understanding as possible as we ALL figure this out. Even though we’re all facing so many unknowns, I am so excited to watch our students’ resilience and innovation as they navigate this new world in their own way. Now more than ever, entrusting someone with your child’s education is the utmost honor, one that I do not take lightly. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, compliments, or anxieties, and please don’t forget to take deep breaths and practice kindness towards yourselves, your students, and each other.
Very Respectfully,
Jackie Glaser

Science class is going to be different than it has ever been. Instead of collaborative, hands on experiments, students are now navigating a distance learning, self-driven science curriculum. Lessons in this class, both in a classroom and over distance learning, are designed to help foster personal passions for self-education and self-improvement. Students will receive engaging yet rigorous demonstrations, project-based assignments, as well as technological skills that will drive them through this pandemic and through the 21st century .
In this integrated science class, we will cover research done in biology, engineering, physics, mathematics, and chemistry to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the world.
In 7th grade, we cover topics such as: the scientific method, cellular biology, ecosystem connections, adaptations and natural selection, and human impacts on the environment. In 8th grade, we will be covering topics such as: the scientific method, astronomy, motion and forces, the properties of waves, metabolism, heredity, evolution, the history of Earth, and diversity of life.
The full Syllabus for each class is posted to the left.

About me
Hi, I’m Ms. Glaser, and I am so excited to be teaching 7th and 8th grade science this year! This will be my very first year teaching and I feel so grateful to join the community of learners here at Gompers Prep. Science is my absolute passion, and I feel so lucky to share this passion with my students! I grew up in Orange County and moved to San Diego to pursue a degree in Environmental Science from San Diego State University. Right when I finished, I immediately knew I wanted to share my excitement with others, so I jumped right into getting my teaching credential from California State University at Long Beach. I am so excited to be back in San Diego and teaching at GPA! I love guiding students through discovery and helping them connect with their world around them. I believe that curiosity and tenacity are skills that make students great scientists and great thinkers and I hope to unlock the world of science for all my students. In my spare time I am teaching myself how to roller skate, listening to true crime podcasts, or swimming in the ocean.
