August 2020

Dear GPA Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to online learning. My name is Ms. Dejesus and I want to welcome you and your child to Gompers Preparatory Academy (GPA). I will be your child’s special education teacher. This is my 2nd year at Gompers Preparatory Academy and I can't wait to work with all of the families this year! This year will be more exciting than last semester as we begin virtual learning for almost the whole school day. Your role as a parent is important and now you will also be my eyes and ears at home.

Let's help your child get used to distance learning! Here are some tips to help the child at home:

8 Tips To Help Student's At Home

  1. Make sure your child is online on time and ready to learn

  2. Charge the computer the night before

  3. Check your student has dressed in GPA attire when joining in live video conferencing.

  4. Know your student’s schedule, start time, and communicate to staff if you have any questions.

  5. Go to Zoom classes daily and utilize our Google Classroom.

  6. Be involved daily.
    - Check-in
    - Ensure your child is on task and has a place to take breaks
    - If your child is not on task, please ask your child this question- "What should you be doing right now?"

  7. Check at the end daily
    - Ask your child, "How did you do today?"
    - Ask your child, "Did you participate in class today?"
    - Ask your child, "What did you learn today?"
    - Ask to see finished assignments or if they are in progress on google classroom.

  8. Stay connected to the teachers

  1. PowerSchool for Parents

  2. Monitor daily progress by checking in our Google Classroom to see where they may need help or if they are off task with their assignments

We will use Zoom and other conferencing and virtual meeting platforms, to deliver class meetings, homework, assessments, special projects, and much more to our students. Additional work will be posted for when your child needs a break from virtual learning. My staff or I will be contacting you to see where your child is if they leave virtual learning for a break so that I can make sure that the child is doing work at home to take a break from looking at a screen.

All rules and expectations we have in person at school will also apply during virtual learning. The 5 Rules of GPA, REACH, the 3 B's, the non-negotiables, and our core beliefs are listed below.

If your child is sick and won't participate for the day, please email the attendance office at attendance@gomperscharter.org and me at room50@gomperscharter.org.

Thank you for being a part of an educational team with me to ensure that virtual learning will be a success!

Thank you,

Ms. Dejesus

About me

Welcome back! I'm Ms. Dejesus and this is my 2nd year teaching at Gompers Preparatory Academy. This school is a wonderful place that always remembers that students come first.

Before coming to GPA, I graduated with a BA and my teaching credential from San Diego State University. I became interested in the field of special education by helping my family business growing up. My parents own and operate group home facilities for people with developmental disabilities. After getting my BA I was working in one of the group homes and I attended one of my client's IEP meeting. After participating in my client's IEP I was inspired to become a teacher. The first few years I taught at Oak Park Elementary in the San Diego Unified School District. I wanted to learn more so I decided to go into substitute teaching so I can see what other teachers were doing that I could implement in the classroom. I also found through substitute teaching that I prefer teaching secondary due to the Community Based Training and Life Skills that would be inappropriate to teach to the little ones.

I'm excited to continue teaching at Gompers Preparatory Academy because the values of the school align with mine. I believe in order to have a successful school year a student needs to feel safe and structure needs to be in place in all settings. I believe that having behavioral expectations across the whole school has benefitted my students in Special Education because they are modeled daily by everyone on campus which they will transition with into adulthood.

Besides teaching I love the performing arts. While I was substitute teaching I did a few background actor jobs on television shows. I have participated locally in community theater and film competitions. I also enjoy taking boxing classes.

I can't wait to see the progress we will have with each student. Let's work together as a team and remember if you need to get in touch with me my email is:
