Dear GPA Parent/Guardian,

At GPA, we have always celebrated our partnership with our parents. We know, better than most schools, that when it comes to your child’s education: We are all in this together.

That fact is true now more than ever. With the worldwide pandemic causing mass disruptions to our normal way of life, it is essential that we work together to ensure that your child still receives a top-quality education, one that is in line with GPA’s long-standing mission of preparing for college.

As your child’s Senior teacher, I promise to use innovative new solutions to our unforeseen problems. Through Zoom and Google Classrooms, your child will be able to read critically, write coherently, and communicate effectively with students and adults in a respectful, professional manner. It is vital that students become good self-advocators, revisit asynchronous lessons when needed, and attend office hours when necessary. At GPA, we’ve always maintained a goal of reaching and connecting with 100% of our individual students. In turn, teachers will differentiate lessons as much as possible, maintain open dialogue with students and parents (especially those who are struggling), and do our best to provide timely, continuous, and constructive feedback.

Working together we can make it through these next few months of Distance Learning. When it is safe to return to campus, we will do so with energy and enthusiasm. This is a time of innovation, creativity, and teamwork.

And I am so grateful to have you, the GPA parents, as teammates.

Thank you for your time.

Overview of class

12th Grade ELA Syllabus - Kelly (AP Lit) 2020-2021
12th Grade Syllabus - Kelly (College Success & Literacy Elective) 2020-2021

syllabus

AP Literature is a college-level literature analysis course. Students are expected to engage with complex, high-level texts on a regular basis through regular reading assignments. While we prepare for the AP test in Spring, students are also expected to prepare for college by pushing their thinking to the “next level” via asking critical thinking questions, regular quizzes, in-class (via Zoom) and online (via Google Classroom) discussion, quick writes, timed essays, and process papers. Texts will cover novels, short stories, poetry, and plays. Analysis is a central component of this course and students should be prepared to voice their opinions, have those opinions challenged, and modify opinions as a result. Due to the worldwide pandemic, AP Literature has moved online. Students should expect to work with e-books and other internet-based resources. Lectures will be delivered both synchronously and asynchronously. Many of the activities, notes, and other learning materials will be distributed via Google Documents called "Digital Notebooks." Students are expected to be active students -- stay on top of reading assignments, engage with texts on textual and subtextual levels, and attend office hours as needed. We may be learning from a distance, but that learning will still be rigorous and important.

College Success is a college-prep reading, writing, and culture course meant to further bridge the gap between the senior year of high school and first year of college. The aim of this class is to provide the following: (1) a dedicated time and place for students to actively engage with the college admission process; (2) provide exposure to college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking; (3) challenge students to think differently and critically about the cultural shifts many first-generation college students face. In short, this elective aims to continue and build upon the mission statement and values that define this school. Students are expected to complete college-admission essays for PIQs, the common app, and scholarships while also engaging with a combination of nonfiction texts across a variety of genres and subgenres in preparation for college writing placement exams. The worldwide pandemic has shown the importance of the ability to read, process, and evaluate a variety of information. As this class has moved online, students should be expected to receive information and feedback synchronously and asynchronously, as well as being active participants in their own learning, via attending office hours and PIQ conferences.

Mr. Kelly

About me

Hi, I'm Mr. Kelly. I began teaching at GPA in August of 2011, making this my tenth year with this incredible, inspiring, and innovative school. I am so enormously grateful to be part of our community. We are a community of educators, students, leaders, and parents who always finding new ways to grow, change, and think. This is my fifth year as a Senior Teacher. I love teaching Seniors because this will be the Class of 2021's most memorable year -- their final chapter of high school. I can't wait to get to know and work with the new seniors and help them on their journey.
